Speculation about which first-team manager in the Premier League would lose their job has finally been answered. It wasn't Liverpool manager Arne Slot, but Enzo Maresca who was forced to leave Stamford Bridge first.

Chelsea officially dismissed Italian coach Enzo Maresca after the turn of the year, Thursday January 1, 2026. The sacking resolves the uncertainty surrounding Maresca's future at Chelsea.

This decision comes amid increasing instability at the club. Rumors of deteriorating relations between Chelsea's management and Maresca had circulated in recent weeks, coinciding with The Blues' declining performance.

Chelsea secured only one win in their last seven matches across all competitions. These results are difficult to accept for a club with Chelsea's level of ambition and investment.

Signs of departure finally became reality when the club made the official announcement.

"Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted ways," stated Chelsea in the official announcement.

Maresca was recruited by Chelsea from Leicester City in July 2024. During two seasons with the London club, the 45-year-old manager delivered two trophies: the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup.

Statistically, this achievement cannot be considered poor. Chelsea even acknowledged Maresca's contribution to the club's recent history.

"Those achievements will remain a significant part of our recent Club History, and we thank him for his contribution to the Club," Chelsea said.

But in the modern Premier League era, past trophies often aren't enough to protect managers from short-term result pressures.

Chelsea believes this season's targets, particularly in domestic and European competitions, require a new direction.

"With major goals still to fight for in four competitions including Champions League qualification, Enzo and the Club believe this change gives the team the best chance to revive their performance this season," Chelsea stated.

Ironically, this dismissal comes when Chelsea hasn't completely fallen out of competitive contention. The Blues currently sit fifth in the Premier League Standings, just narrowly outside the Champions League spots.

In Europe, Chelsea ranks 13th in the Champions League Standings with two matches remaining.

Meanwhile in other domestic competitions, Chelsea remains alive in all tournaments. The Blues will face Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup third round, and have already reached the Carabao Cup Semifinal.

But for Chelsea's management, "good enough" positions aren't sufficient. In a club culture craving both stability and instant results, Maresca became a victim of rising expectations.

Maresca's sacking serves as a reminder that in the Premier League, a manager's tenure isn't measured by their contract, but by the scoreboard results.
