As the year draws to a close, the Tambora National Park Office has closed all hiking trails leading to Mount Tambora on Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This decision was made not to limit human experience, but to protect both humans and nature simultaneously.
The Head of the Tambora National Park Office, Abdul Aziz Bakri, stated that the temporary closure of the Mount Tambora hiking trails is for mutual safety and preserving nature sustainably.
"Hiking Tourism activities in Tambora National Park are temporarily closed," he said on Friday, December 26, 2025.

This closure encompasses all trails and hiking activities starting December 28, 2025, until an undetermined time.
According to management, this decision is also intended as an ecological pause for the Conservation area.
This step was taken to ensure the safety of visitors, guides, porters, and field officers, while also giving the Tambora ecosystem and biodiversity space to recover naturally.
Waiting for Nature to be Ready for Visitors Again
The reopening of hiking trails will depend entirely on natural conditions, especially weather and safety. Reopening will later be announced through the official announcement of the Tambora National Park Office.
Mount Tambora is not just a peak to be conquered, but a landscape holding the most dramatic geological memory in the archipelago. On Sumbawa Island, this mountain stands as a natural monument and a living space for thousands of species.
Tambora was designated a National Geopark by the Indonesian National Geopark Committee, under the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs of Indonesia, on November 20, 2017. Tambora National Park spans two regencies on Sumbawa Island: Bima and Dompu, NTB.
This is where one of the world's most iconic volcanic landscapes resides.
Its main tourist attraction is the caldera at 2,850 masl (meters above sea level). The Tambora caldera was formed by a colossal eruption with a scale of seven VEI (Volcanic Explosivity Index) in 1815.
That eruption left a mark not only on the Earth's surface but also on human history.
