Mohamed Salah reaffirmed his status as the key player for the Egyptian National Team on the big stage. The captain's solitary goal secured Egypt's qualification for the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating South Africa in a tense, high-pressure duel.

In the second Group B match at Adrar Stadium, Agadir, Saturday, December 27, 2025 WIB, Salah's goal came from the penalty spot in the 45th minute. Egypt's 1-0 victory over South Africa sent them through to the knockout phase.

Egypt managed to secure the win despite being reduced to 10 men from the 45+2 minute mark after Mohamed Hany was shown a red card.

Thanks to this victory, Egypt advances to the round of 16 and leads the provisional Standings of Group B at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with six points from two matches.

On the other hand, the defeat leaves South Africa stuck in second place in the provisional Group B Standings of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with three points from two matches.

South Africa still has a chance to qualify for the next round if they can secure a win in their final match.

From the outset, Egypt showed their ambition to secure a knockout phase ticket by taking the attacking initiative.

The key opportunity came after Egypt was awarded a penalty. Salah, stepping up as the executor, successfully beat South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The score changed to 1-0 in the 45th minute.

However, Egypt had to play with 10 men from the 45+2 minute after full-back Mohamed Hany received a second yellow card from the referee.

This situation spurred South Africa to try and turn the game around by increasing pressure and deploying more players forward in search of an equalizer. But goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy and the Egyptian defense held firm.

Despite constant pressure, Egypt remained dangerous through quick counter-attacks, utilizing Salah's movement and pace to relieve pressure and disrupt South Africa's rhythm.

Until the final whistle blew, South Africa failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage. The 1-0 scoreline for Egypt's victory stood.

With one goal, one red card, and 45 minutes of resisting pressure, Egypt emerged victorious and progressed to the knockout phase of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
