Arsenal Star Named Strong Candidate for Future England Captain Replacing Harry Kane

The generational shift in the England national team is becoming evident. Former captain of The Three Lions, Wayne Rooney, has publicly identified Declan Rice as the ideal figure to eventually succeed Harry Kane as national team captain.

Rooney made this statement after directly observing Rice's impressive performances for Arsenal in both domestic and European competitions.

“For me, he's the one likely waiting to take over when Harry eventually hangs up his boots,” stated Rooney on The Wayne Rooney Show program, quoted Monday, December 22, 2025.

Rooney noted Rice's leadership isn't just naturally emerging but is backed by consistent top-level performances. 

During Arsenal's 1-0 victory over Everton, Rice dominated play and influenced the game across nearly all areas of the pitch.

Statistically, Rice's contributions stand out significantly. He's been directly involved in seven Arsenal goals across all competitions this season—scoring twice and providing five assists. 

This form has been crucial in propelling The Gunners to the top of both the Premier League and Champions League Standings.

Beyond club Football, Rice has begun establishing his leadership identity with England. Across 72 international appearances, he's twice worn the captain's armband.

This occurred during England's 2-2 draw against Belgium in March 2024 and their 3-0 victory over Wales this October.

Rooney emphasized that Rice's leadership extends beyond symbolism, manifesting clearly in his playing style.

The Manchester United legend praised Rice's game-reading ability, decision-making precision, and tactical flexibility—from supporting center-backs to making goal-scoring runs into the penalty area.

Rooney believes Rice's blend of technical quality, mentality, and personal character makes him England's long-term central figure.

"He's the right person to succeed Kane because of his spirit and personality. Everyone likes him," Rooney affirmed.

As Harry Kane approaches the eventual end of his international career, England isn't just preparing an attacking successor but also a leadership heir.

For Wayne Rooney, the answer is unequivocally Declan Rice.
