The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially launched a new competition titled AFC Nations League. This tournament is specifically designed for national team level and will become a vital part of Asia's international match calendar, including for Indonesia National Team.
The AFC Nations League represents a strategic breakthrough addressing the classic challenge faced by many Asian nations: the difficulty in securing competitive, evenly-matched, and consistently scheduled friendly opponents. In recent years, international matches often lost significance due to opponent quality imbalance, high operational costs, and limited sporting value for participating teams.
Through this competition, AFC aims to ensure every international match window features relevant fixtures directly impacting national team development. In its official statement, AFC emphasized this Asian version of Nations League isn't merely an additional tournament, but part of restructuring the international match system.

"This step is part of AFC's ongoing efforts to enhance development opportunities for Member Associations (MAs) and establish a more structured, sustainable international match framework," stated the official AFC website on Sunday, 2 December 2025.
The AFC Nations League was introduced against concerns about international match quality in Asia. Many national teams faced opponents of vastly different levels, hindering player development and performance improvement goals. Additionally, organizing friendlies frequently encountered budget and logistical constraints.
Using the Nations League format, AFC seeks to implement a tiered competition system where national teams face opponents of relatively equal competitive standards. This model, previously adopted in Europe, has proven effective in increasing match intensity and appeal.
All AFC Nations League matches will be included in the official FIFA calendar. The inaugural edition is scheduled to commence in March next year, coinciding with FIFA's international window. Thus, every match carries official status and affects world rankings.
"This proposed competition aims to ensure regular, meaningful international matches during FIFA windows, promote competitive balance through tiered matchups, enhance cost efficiency via centralized coordination, and provide clearer progression pathways for national teams," explained the AFC website.
AFC General Secretary Datuk Seri Windsor affirmed the Nations League demonstrates the confederation's commitment to creating a healthier, more sustainable international match ecosystem. He stressed every member nation deserves access to quality matches without excessive logistical or financial burdens.
“The AFC Nations League marks a significant step in our ongoing commitment to support the development of AFC’s 47 Member Associations. By providing a structured competition platform during FIFA international windows, alongside improved calendar stability and clear Sporting incentives, we aim to ensure consistent access to high-quality matches while addressing logistical and cost challenges faced by national teams,” Datuk stated.
Beyond technical and developmental impacts, AFC also views the Nations League as a high-value commercial product. Its clear format, fixed schedule, and balanced rivalries are expected to attract sponsors, broadcast rights holders, and commercial partners across Asia.
“Beyond sporting benefits, we also observe strong interest and growing demand from commercial partners for Nations League-style competitions,” he added.
For Indonesia National Team, the AFC Nations League presents major opportunities for more consistent, high-quality international matches. Facing evenly-matched opponents, the Garuda squad can maximize each fixture as a proving ground for performance improvement and mental fortification at Asian level.
If optimally implemented, the AFC Nations League could become a new foundation for Asian Football advancement, transforming international matches in the region into more competitive, valuable, and sustainable encounters.
