Jakarta - Indra Sjafri has officially ceased handling the Indonesian U-22 National Team. The Indonesian football Federation (PSSI) terminated its collaboration with the coach following the team's performance falling far below target at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.
As defending Gold Medal champions from the 2023 edition, the Garuda Muda instead exited at the group stage without winning any medal. This occurred despite the pre-tournament target of securing at least a silver medal.
PSSI's National Team Agency (BTN) Chairman Sumardji confirmed this decision during a Jakarta press conference on Tuesday (16/12/2025).

"We agreed to conduct evaluations, with the first step being the termination of the working relationship between Coach Indra Sjafri and PSSI," he stated.
The contract dissolution was executed professionally with all rights and obligations fulfilled. Sjafri, who also serves on PSSI's Technical Directorate staff, reportedly accepted the decision with professional maturity.
Addressing these changes, PSSI will restructure youth-level coaching. Temporarily, Indonesia's senior National Team Coach will concurrently handle the U-22/U-23 squad, with the dual-role coach's identity to be announced shortly.
Sumardji Resigns from National Team Manager Position
Managerial changes extend beyond coaching, with Sumardji announcing his resignation as national team manager across all levels, including senior and age-group teams. "I will hand over my duties and responsibilities as national team manager to the PSSI Chairman," he clarified.
While stepping down as manager, Sumardji will maintain focus as BTN Chairman. He publicly apologized for the disappointing results and pledged corrective actions, emphasizing his resignation resulted from considered moral accountability post-evaluation rather than impulsive reaction.
These measures form part of comprehensive reforms following the SEA Games 2025 failure while preparing for upcoming major national football commitments.
