In efforts to enhance the quality of the Indonesian National Team, PSSI has entered a crucial phase in the search for a new head coach. Two European names, Timur Kapadze and Giovanni van Bronckhorst, have emerged as the leading candidates undergoing in-depth assessment.

According to football observer Ronny Pangemanan, both bring exceptional qualifications. "Kapadze is recognized for having a very strong tactical foundation and discipline. On the other hand, Van Bronckhorst brings invaluable assets as a former top-tier player and a coach who has proven his success in managing elite European clubs," explained Pangemanan.

The move by the PSSI delegation flying to Europe to hold direct meetings with several candidates for the National Team coach is seen as a signal of serious intent to secure a highly qualified coach.

Challenges and Opportunities Await the New Coach

Whoever is ultimately selected as coach will immediately face a major mission. The first challenge is preparing the Garuda squad for the upcoming FIFA ASEAN Cup. Simultaneously, Indonesian football has also received the honor of being chosen to host the FIFA Series 2026. This tournament, bringing together national teams from various continents, is a global recognition of the development of football in the country.

Foreign Player Policy as a Catalyst

To support long-term goals, domestic policies are also being adjusted. The latest regulation allowing clubs to have up to 11 foreign players—with 7 permitted on the field—is expected to drive improvements in the quality of the Indonesian Super League. Fiercer competition at the club level is believed to spur the improvement of local players' skills. By frequently competing against quality foreign players, it is hoped that top talents will emerge, ready to strengthen the Indonesian National Team in the future.

With the combination of competent coaching leadership, recognition from FIFA, and progressive league policies, Indonesian football is on a positive trend. All these factors become valuable assets for the Indonesian National Team to be ready to compete and make waves in international tournaments in 2026 and 2027.
