Portugal finally claimed their first-ever U-17 World Cup title after defeating Austria 1-0 in the final at Khalifa International Stadium on Thursday, November 27, 2025, local time. With an aggressive pressing style from the opening minutes, the young Selecao das Quinas wrote a new chapter in their football journey.

Quoted from FIFA's website, Portugal's victory over Austria came thanks to Anisio Cabral's solitary goal in the 32nd minute. A perfectly weighted cross from Duarte Cunha was converted by Cabral for the only goal in a tense match.

For Portugal, this marks a monumental achievement. Throughout their U-17 World Cup participation, their previous best finish was third place in the 1989 edition in Scotland. Now, the 2025 generation has brought home the trophy they could only dream of for decades.

Meanwhile, Austria has reason to hold their heads high. This runner-up position is their best performance in U-17 World Cup history, having never previously advanced beyond the group stage.

Italy completed the podium by defeating Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw in regular time.

Match Progression: Portugal Dominates

Portugal took attacking initiative. Just three minutes into the match, Duarte Cunha fired a dangerous shot that went wide.

Austria responded quickly through attempts by Hasan Deshishku and Johannes Moser in the 4th minute, but both missed the target.

After several chances, Portugal broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute when Anisio Cabral capitalized on Cunha's pass. The score became 1-0, forcing Austria to chase the game.

Entering the second half, Austria increased intensity. Deshishku's 48th-minute free kick tested Portugal goalkeeper Romario, who shone brilliantly throughout.

In the 81st minute, Ifeanyi Ndukwe's header nearly equalized, but Romario again denied the golden opportunity.

Austria pressed until the end, but Portugal defended with discipline and focus. The 1-0 score held until full time. One goal proved enough for Portugal to lift the trophy for the first time.

With this victory, Portugal's young generation not only closed the tournament with pride but also opened new hopes for their football future. A historic night in Doha, and perhaps the dawn of a new era for Portuguese football.
