Amidst mounting speculation, the search for the Indonesian national team's new head coach enters its most crucial phase. The public is left wondering: who exactly is on PSSI's shortlist? Despite five names being mentioned by PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir as candidates, all remain tightly under wraps.
However, one name consistently surfaces: Liverpool assistant coach, Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
The narrative intensified after rumors emerged that Sumardji, the national team manager and Head of BTN, flew to Europe to conduct direct interviews with the candidates. The signal is strong: PSSI wants a coach not only with a world-class CV but also one capable of giving Garuda a clear playing identity.

Mystery of the 5 Candidates, Public Grows Anxious
It's been almost two weeks since Yunus Nusi confirmed that the new national team coach would be announced. Yet, the names remain hidden.
“Currently still in the selection process being conducted by the team,” said Yunus Nusi.
“It will be announced as soon and as quickly as possible. Hopefully next week it can be done,” he added.
But until now, PSSI has kept the identities of all five candidates secret.
"We will respect the privacy of every candidate; these coaches are still with their clubs or still with another national team," said Sumardji.
"Therefore, we will not reveal who the candidates are," he continued.
This secrecy isn't new in international football. Many national federations choose to keep candidates confidential to maintain good relations between the coach and their current club. But for the Indonesian public, accustomed to online drama, such a mystery becomes fertile ground for major speculation.
The Hottest Rumor: Giovanni van Bronckhorst
In recent days, the name Giovanni van Bronckhorst, the Dutch football legend with Indonesian roots, has dominated social media chatter.
Naturally, Van Bronckhorst is currently part of Liverpool's coaching staff under Arne Slot, a football environment rich in modern tactical ideas, structured pressing, quick transitions, and balanced build-up phases.
The public believes he is the figure Sumardji will meet in Europe. Moreover, rumors circulating since early 2025 suggested that Erick Thohir's primary target back then wasn't Patrick Kluivert, but Van Bronckhorst.
Van Bronckhorst is no ordinary name. He led Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title, reached the Champions League final as a player, and is known for his disciplined and highly organized tactical approach. His management style is often praised for its ability to unite young and senior players.
However, all this remains at the level of netizen assumption. There has been no confirmation from either PSSI or Liverpool.
Sumardji Heads to Europe: Strong Signal or Routine Mission?
PSSI Vice Chairman Zainudin Amali stated that Sumardji "will go to Europe" to conduct interviews. This timing instantly became the spark for rumors.
Direct interview strategies are very common in the process of recruiting national team coaches, especially when federations are targeting big names from top European leagues.
PSSI is said to want a coach capable of bringing a modern playing identity, building a long-term program, understanding Southeast Asian football, and of course, possessing a competitive track record at the club level.
The signal is clear: Indonesia needs more than just a "big name." Garuda needs a capable football architect across all aspects.
Awaiting PSSI's Final Decision
For now, only one thing is certain: the official announcement is coming soon. Whoever is chosen, it's natural for the public to hope for a figure who understands Indonesian playing philosophy and can build a strong foundation ahead of major events like the Asian Cup Qualifiers and SEA Games.
In this atmosphere full of mystery, netizen speculation is understandable. However, PSSI seems determined to let the process run more professionally, without rushing, and without public disclosure until all candidates have been interviewed.
Is Van Bronckhorst truly one of the candidates? Or is PSSI preparing a surprise? The answer might just be days away.
