Imagine boarding a "plane" from Tokyo to New York, not through the usual sky route, but via outer space. The travel time? Only about 60 minutes.

This is not a dream, but a real plan being prepared by Japan through the collaboration of two major players in the travel and space technology industry, Nippon Travel Agency Co. and Innovative Space Carrier.

According to The Mainichi, this project is called a point-to-point transportation service through space. The target is for the first commercial flight to be launched in the 2030s.

If realized, this could be a revolution in global mobility, equivalent to when humans first conquered transatlantic flight.

From Tokyo to New York in Just 1 Hour, A Scenario Once Impossible

This crazy plan isn't just a technological gimmick. The space vehicle under development is said to take off from an offshore platform, fly through the atmosphere, then glide along a suborbital path before descending back to Earth on the other side of the planet.

With this concept, the distance between Tokyo and New York, which usually takes over 12 hours with a conventional plane, could be drastically reduced to about one hour of travel.

Technically, this project is similar to the concept of suborbital space flight previously explored by SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic. But Japan is taking a different approach, not for space tourism, but for efficient, fast global transportation.

The vehicle will be designed to be reusable, signifying a major step for Japan towards a sustainable aviation industry.

Japan's Vision Towards the "Space Mobility" Era

This move underscores Japan's seriousness in mastering the space mobility sector, a future transportation concept combining intercontinental travel and space technology.

Kojiro Hatada, President of Innovative Space Carrier, emphasized that their main focus isn't just creating a fast rocket, but one that is also efficient and economical.

"We are striving to make space travel more efficient and affordable by maximizing the potential of every rocket," explained Hatada.

This approach reflects a strategy similar to Elon Musk's SpaceX, which successfully reduced launch costs through reusable rocket systems. But Japan wants to take this technology to a different level: transportation between countries via low Earth orbit.

By increasing the number of flights a single vehicle can perform, the cost per passenger could be significantly reduced. This means, in the long term, intercontinental travel via space could become as cheap as a regular business class plane ticket.

When Tourism and Technology Meet

This project also shows how Japan's tourism sector is evolving. Nippon Travel Agency, known until now as a conventional travel agency, is taking on a major role in developing advanced flight technology.

Through this project, they hope to create a "fast bridge between countries," connecting Tokyo and the United States with unprecedented travel times.

For Japan, this is not just a transportation project, but a symbol of national ambition to lead the global travel revolution. If realized, it's not impossible that future travel between countries will resemble a rocket launch more than a regular flight.

With this project, Japan asserts its serious step towards a new era of space tourism, where travel is no longer measured in flight hours, but in minutes.

More Than Just a Transportation Innovation

Beyond being a technological leap, this project could also have a major impact on the global ecosystem.

The future of transportation is no longer about the world's fastest plane, but about who can safely bring humans out of the atmosphere and back again quickly and efficiently.

Japan seems ready to be its pioneer.
