Klopp will lead the Germany national football team, and has confirmed that Die Mannschaft is capable of defeating any opponent.

A new era for the Germany National Team has just begun. Juergen Klopp has been appointed as head coach of Die Mannschaft, replacing Julian Nagelsmann who was dismissed following Germany's failure at the 2026 World Cup. 

The German Football Association (DFB) announced Klopp's appointment via their official accounts. The arrival of the 59-year-old coach marks a major step for the DFB to rebuild the national team's strength, after Germany was eliminated in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.

"Welcome Juergen! Juergen Klopp is officially the head coach of the German national team," wrote the DFB on their Instagram page.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf stated that Klopp had been the federation's first choice from the very start, in the effort to restore German football's glory. The four-time World Cup winning nation last claimed the global title at the 2014 edition held in Brazil.

"We held very intensive discussions over the past few weeks. He was our top choice right from the beginning; everyone within the association was in full agreement on this. We did everything within our power to recruit Jürgen," stated Neuendorf.

For his tenure, Klopp will work once again with his trusted former colleagues from his time managing Liverpool. Pepijn Lijnders has been appointed as assistant coach, while Peter Krawietz joins as part of Klopp's core coaching team.

In addition, former Borussia Dortmund player Sven Bender has joined the coaching staff to support the national team's transition process.

After leaving Liverpool in 2024, Klopp served as Red Bull Sporting Director for two seasons. However, the opportunity to lead the national team lured him back to active coaching duties.

According to multiple German media reports, Klopp has signed a four-year contract running until the 2030 World Cup. Ahead of that tournament, he will lead Germany at Euro 2028, which will be hosted across England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Klopp expressed confidence in the potential of Germany's squad. He stated that Die Mannschaft should not constantly compare themselves to France, Spain or Argentina.

"There is no use constantly measuring ourselves against France, Spain, or Argentina. The most important thing is to look at ourselves, and at how we play our football," he stated, as quoted from the official X account of German football outlet iMiaSanMia.

Klopp noted that a team's strength is not only determined by individual player quality, but also by a clear collective playing identity.

"When people here in Germany ask 'Are we as good as France?' the answer is no, that is not the case. When they ask 'Do we have players like Dembélé, Mbappé, Doué, or Barcola?' the answer is also no. But we can still beat them," said Klopp.

While enthusiastic to start this new chapter, Klopp acknowledged he will still need time to properly get to know all of his players.

Klopp's debut match in charge of the Germany National Team is scheduled for 25 September against the Netherlands, in the opening fixture of the UEFA Nations League.

"Thankfully this first match is not tomorrow. I would be completely overwhelmed right now. I will be watching matches in every country where our players are based, and of course here in Germany as well," he said.

He confirmed that his main priority during his first weeks as head coach will be building communication with the players.

"Recently I have gathered a huge amount of background insight. Maintaining good communication with the players is very important, and I will reach out to all of them right from the start. That will be my very first task," he concluded.
