Indonesian men's singles shuttler Alwi Farhan kept the Red and White's hopes alive at the 2026 BWF World Tour Super 750 Japan Open after securing his spot in the round of 16. The young Indonesian badminton athlete delivered an impressive performance, sweeping home favourite Kenta Nishimoto in straight games 21-14, 21-11 in Tokyo, Japan.

Competing in front of the home crowd, the 2026 Australian Open champion successfully controlled the match tempo and gave Nishimoto almost no room to execute his playing style.

Right from the first game, Alwi played aggressively, capitalising on every mistake made by his opponent before closing out the victory in two straight games.

After the match, Alwi admitted he did not overthink his opponent. His only main focus was to run the strategy and game plan that had been prepared beforehand.

"I don't know what was going on or what Nishimoto was feeling today. I just worked with whatever unfolded on the court, I stayed fully focused on my own game," Alwi stated in an official PP PBSI press release after the match concluded.

This win over Nishimoto advances Alwi to the last 16, but a far tougher challenge already awaits. He will next face French men's singles player Alex Lanier, an opponent who has troubled him on multiple previous encounters.

Despite holding an unfavourable head-to-head record against Lanier, Alwi is not treating this as a burden. Instead, he views the upcoming match as an opportunity to test the quality of his game, as well as strengthen his competitive mentality.

"I will meet Alex Lanier from France in the round of 16. It doesn't bother me even if our recent meetings have been difficult for me. I need to go through these uncomfortable situations, that is what makes me stronger," Alwi added.

Mental fortitude is a critical asset for this young shuttler. Alwi assesses that every high-stakes match will help him develop and mature at the international competitive level.

He confirmed that he will give his full maximum effort to keep his chances alive to progress deeper in this Super 750 tournament.

"So no matter what challenge lies ahead, I guarantee I will fight with absolutely everything I have," said Alwi.

Alwi's progression to the last 16 extends his positive run of form throughout 2026. Following his Australian Open title triumph, he now has another major platform to prove himself at the Japan Open.

The upcoming clash against Alex Lanier is projected to be one of the most anticipated matches of the round of 16. Aside from being a chance for redemption, this fixture also gives the Indonesian representative an opportunity to overturn the underwhelming results from their prior meetings.

Should Alwi overcome Lanier, he will further cement his status as one of Indonesia's most promising young men's singles shuttlers, while also opening up the path to advance even further in the 2026 Japan Open.
