Royal Birkdale will once again host The Open 2026, with wind and weather conditions set to be the primary challenges for the championship.

The 2026 Open Championship is set to enter a new chapter as Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England, has once again been entrusted to host the 154th edition of the world's oldest major golf tournament. A total of 156 of the world's best golfers will compete to claim the Claret Jug.

Royal Birkdale is recognised as one of the finest links courses worldwide. Its coastal location beside the Irish Sea means wind direction and shifting weather patterns are regularly the deciding factors that shape tournament outcomes.

Unlike standard golf competitions, natural conditions exert an overwhelming influence at The Open Championship. Wind speed, air temperature, and humidity levels can alter the difficulty of every single hole in a matter of hours.

Weather forecasts indicate moderate north winds for the opening two rounds. These conditions are expected to deliver more consistent play compared to recent editions. Daytime temperatures will sit around 20 degrees Celsius, with generally clear, dry skies.

That said, weather along the British coastline is notoriously unpredictable. Sudden shifts can occur without warning at any point, and will likely prove the critical difference in the race for the title.

When reviewing historical data, this year's course conditions align far more closely with the 2017 Open than the 2008 edition. In 2017, Jordan Spieth won the tournament with a total score of 12-under 268, finishing three strokes clear of the field.

That same tournament also made history when Branden Grace carded a bogey-free 62 during the third round. This remains the first ever round below 63 strokes recorded across the entire history of major championship golf.

In stark contrast, the 2008 Open Championship ranks as one of the most brutal editions in the modern era. Padraig Harrington lifted the trophy with a final total of 3-over 283, making him the only 21st century major winner to claim a title with an over-par final score.

Royal Birkdale will debut a fully updated layout following extensive renovation works. One of the most striking changes is the new 241-yard par 3 15th hole, while the former 15th has been repositioned as the 602-yard par 5 14th hole.

Following the redesign led by course architect Tom Mackenzie, total course length has been extended to 7,223 yards. These changes are expected to present fresh challenges for competitors, particularly across the closing nine holes which now feature two par 5s as prime birdie opportunities.

Unlike most traditional links layouts, Royal Birkdale rewards aggressive play when wind conditions are favourable. Approach shots with short irons are projected to be one of the most effective strategies for posting low scores.

41 golfers in this year's field previously competed at Royal Birkdale during the 2017 tournament. Of this group, six finished inside the top 10 on that occasion, with a further five placing inside the top 25.

Beyond the Claret Jug itself, competitors are also playing for major career incentives. A top 10 finish will secure automatic entry to the 2027 Open Championship at St Andrews, while the top four players earn direct qualification for the 2027 Masters Tournament.

The eventual champion will also receive a full suite of privileges: lifetime Open Championship entry up to the age of 60, invitations to all four majors through 2031, full PGA TOUR exemption status, and eligibility to compete in THE PLAYERS Championship.
