Indonesia's leading men's singles shuttler Jonatan Christie has seen his run at the BWF World Tour Super 750 Japan Open 2026 end early. Meanwhile, women's doubles pair Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari kept the Red and White nation's hopes alive by progressing to the second round.
Competing in Tokyo on Tuesday, fourth seed Jonatan was unable to contain the aggressive play of Thailand's Panitchapon Teeraratsakul. He suffered defeat in straight games with scores of 16-21, 14-21.
This result came as an upset, as Jonatan had previously beaten Panitchapon during the semi-finals of the 2026 Indonesia Open. However, match conditions in Japan presented a completely different set of challenges.

Jonatan confirmed that altered shuttlecock characteristics were a major factor disrupting his performance throughout the match. He noted the shuttle travelled significantly faster compared to his practice session the day prior, which caused his pre-planned game strategy to fail.
“First of all, the shuttlecock conditions are very different from when I tested the court yesterday. Today it is much stiffer, and travels far quicker. We did try to adjust our play style and game patterns, but I still could not properly adapt to these changes today,” Jonatan stated in an official PP PBSI press release after the match.
The 28-year-old shuttler also admitted he was slow to adjust to the match rhythm, most notably during the second game. While he managed to string together consecutive points to reduce the deficit, he was unable to reverse the course of the match.
“I was late to react and adapt, especially in the second game. I did pull off a run of points, but the gap was already too large by that point, it was very difficult to catch up. Panitchapon also played at a much higher level of aggression today,” he said.
Per Jonatan's assessment, Panitchapon's attacking playstyle became even more effective when supported by the faster shuttlecock conditions.
Indonesian Women's Doubles Defeat Taiwanese Pair
Against the disappointment from the men's singles side, positive news emerged from the women's doubles draw. Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari advanced to the Round of 32 after overcoming Taiwanese pairing Chang Ching Hui/Yang Ching Tun 21-16, 21-8.
After initially being drawn into the opposition's game rhythm at the start of the first game, the duo affectionately known as Ana/Trias successfully adjusted their strategy following the mid-game interval.
By shifting match tempo, Ana/Trias took control of long rallies and utilised the fast shuttlecock conditions to apply pressure on the Taiwanese pair through to the end of the match.
“After the first game interval we changed our game plan, adjusted the tempo and stopped playing into their patterns. That worked well, so we carried that same approach into the second game. We properly anticipated their preference for extended rallies,” Ana explained.
This victory provides valuable momentum for the Indonesian pair, who also recorded strong performances at the prior Indonesia Open and Australian Open tournaments.
Ana/Trias will face formidable Chinese opponents Liu Sheng Shu/Tan Ning in the second round, scheduled for Thursday 16 July 2026. Despite drawing a tough challenger, the Indonesian duo have committed to perform at maximum intensity right from the start of the match.
“We face Liu Sheng Shu/Tan Ning (China) the day after tomorrow. We just want to put in a solid performance. We need to stay focused right from the very first point,” stated Trias.
