The 4th Hot Air Balloon Festival of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP) brings fresh new value to tourism in Banyumas Regency, Central Java. Beyond serving as public entertainment, this event has increasingly solidified its position as a prominent tourism agenda that draws visitors from various regions.

Banyumas Regent Sadewo Tri Lastiono assessed that the implementation of this festival delivers positive impacts for the development of the local tourism sector. According to him, UMP's consistency in organizing this activity while actively involving the community is worthy of appreciation.

While attending the Hot Air Balloon Festival at Mas Mansoer Field, UMP Campus 1, Dukuhwaluh Village, Kembaran District on Sunday morning, Sadewo stated that this activity has developed into an established tourism agenda.

"This is already the fourth edition, and it clearly succeeds in attracting tourists. I spoke with several visitors earlier, they do not only come from Banyumas, people from surrounding areas also attend. I request this balloon festival to be held at least once every year and formalized as an official annual event," he stated.

According to Sadewo, the Banyumas Regency Government provides full support for this festival, including simplifying licensing procedures. This support is expected to drive better implementation of the festival in the coming years.

Aligned with this view, UMP Rector Prof. Jebul Suroso explained that the Hot Air Balloon Festival forms part of the university's commitment to create social impact, by strengthening the tourism sector while simultaneously encouraging local community economic growth.

"Alhamdulillah, the hot air balloons have been launched for the fourth time today. This is our driving spirit: to ensure this university delivers positive social impact for the people of Banyumas. When tourists visit, the local economy will also be stimulated," he said.

This year's festival was joined by 31 hot air balloons from hot air balloon communities in Wonosobo Regency. The presence of dozens of colorful balloons became the main attraction, drawing tourists from various regions including Yogyakarta, West Java, even as far as Jakarta.

The high volume of tourist arrivals created a multiplier effect for the local economy. The hospitality sector, culinary businesses, MSME operators, and all tourist destinations across Banyumas felt the benefits from the increased number of visitors throughout the festival period.

Jebul added that the "tourism campus" concept carried by UMP is an implementation of the three core duties of higher education (Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi). Through this concept, academic activities, research outputs, community service programmes, and MSME empowerment can all run in parallel with tourism sector development.

He expressed appreciation for the Banyumas Regency Government's support, which has included the Hot Air Balloon Festival into the official regional event agenda as well as facilitated all licensing processes. Additionally, infrastructure developments such as road widening in front of UMP Campus 1 are expected to further improve comfort for visiting tourists.

The high visitor enthusiasm proves the strong appeal of this festival. Umi, a visitor from Purwokerto, shared that this was her first time attending the Hot Air Balloon Festival and she found the event very enjoyable.

"This is my first time coming here. It is really entertaining, since it is holiday season right now this makes for a nice refreshing activity with my family," she said.
