Cape Verde has written an inspiring story at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Making their first ever appearance at football's biggest global tournament, the African nation made history by securing qualification to the Round of 32 after a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia in their final Group H fixture, held at Houston Stadium, United States.
The single point from this draw was sufficient for Cape Verde to finish second in Group H, ending the group stage with three points from three matches. They progress alongside Spain, who topped the group with seven points after beating Uruguay 1-0 in the final round of group matches.
Cape Verde's success confirmed the elimination of both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia from the 2026 World Cup, as neither side collected the points required to advance to the knockout phase.

Despite only recording three points total, Cape Verde showed remarkable consistency by completing the group stage without suffering a single defeat. Three consecutive draws were enough to carry the tournament debutants through to the Round of 32.
One of the standout figures behind this historic run is veteran goalkeeper Vozinha. The 40-year-old custodian kept a clean sheet for Cape Verde during the decisive match against Saudi Arabia.
This was Vozinha's second clean sheet of the group stage, having also shut out European champions Spain in an earlier group fixture.
Even while being celebrated as one of the team's heroes, Vozinha stressed that Cape Verde's achievement was the product of collective hard work across the entire squad, rather than any individual performance.
"A lot of people probably thought Cape Verde's players weren't good enough. But we came here to prove we have real quality, and that we can compete at this level. Every one of our players belongs at this standard, they can play anywhere, including in the biggest competitions and top leagues in the world," Vozinha stated, as quoted by CnA.
Vozinha's words reflect the quiet determination Cape Verde have carried throughout the tournament. Arriving as first-time participants with almost no senior world stage experience, they have dismissed all pre-tournament doubts through disciplined organisation and a resolute, hard-to-break defence.
This progression to the knockout rounds serves as proof that unranked, unfancied nations can compete at the very highest level of international football. Cape Verde have demonstrated that structure, team unity and competitive mentality can form a powerful equaliser against far more experienced opposition.
Their extraordinary campaign now moves to its next phase. A major challenge lies ahead: Cape Verde will face defending world champions Argentina in their Round of 32 knockout match.
