The campaign of Indonesian Men's Singles Anthony Sinisuka Ginting at the Australian Open 2026 has ended prematurely. Indonesia's flagship Badminton athlete was knocked out in the Round of 32 after falling in straight games against China's Dong Tian Yao at the Quaycentre, Olympic Boulevard, Sydney on Wednesday.
Ginting was defeated with identical 15-21, 15-21 scorelines. This result comes as a setback for the 29-year-old player, who arrived in Australia targeting a deep tournament run to improve his form on the BWF World Tour circuit.
Ginting actually produced promising play right from the opening exchanges, even holding the lead at multiple points during the first game. However, a tactical shift from Dong Tian Yao completely overturned the match dynamic on court.

The Chinese shuttler ramped up his aggression and sustained relentless pressure that left Ginting constantly on the back foot, as Dong's dominance gradually broke down the Indonesian representative's match rhythm.
"Today my opponent simply performed better than me. I had built an early lead, but he adjusted his strategy and playing pattern, he kept pushing the pace and I could not break out of the pressure he applied," Ginting stated in an official PBSI post-match release.
Alongside struggling to adapt to his opponent's changed game plan, Ginting also admitted he committed a high number of unforced errors during high-stakes moments.
"On top of that, I made far too many personal mistakes, especially at decisive points. When I was leading, when scores were tied, and at critical junctures, I failed to properly maintain control of the match," he explained.
Throughout the first game, Dong Tian Yao sustained his consistent pressure, while Ginting made multiple attempts to fight back into the set.
A near-identical pattern played out in the second game. Despite trailing, Ginting showed strong fighting spirit to close the gap and level the scores at 15-15.
"I had good momentum when I equalised at 15-15 in the second game, but play was paused for an extended period after he lodged a protest. Once we resumed, I simply could not get my rhythm back," Ginting added.
When the match restarted, Dong Tian Yao remained composed and converted opportunities far more effectively, while Ginting could not recapture his earlier momentum.
Despite this disappointing result, Indonesia still has one men's singles player progressing to the next stage. Alwi Farhan produced a dominant display to eliminate Taiwan's Jhuo-Fu Liao with comfortable 21-13, 21-12 straight game victory.
This win advances Alwi to the Round of 16, where he will face Minoru Koga. The Japanese shuttler previously defeated Taiwan's Li Yang Su with a final scoreline of 21-13, 15-21, 21-16.
