Uruguay national team has officially announced their final 26-man squad to compete at the 2026 World Cup. Luis Suarez's omission from La Celeste's squad has become a major talking point across global football.
Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa made the decision not to include the 39-year-old veteran striker in the squad.
This decision marks a new era for Uruguay, as the nation will now rely on their next generation of players to compete on football's biggest global stage.
Attention surrounding Suarez's absence intensified further after the former Liverpool and Barcelona forward had previously openly stated he was open to returning to represent the national team.
Despite having spent 20 months out of the international setup and previously announcing his retirement from international football, Suarez confirmed he was ready to reverse this decision should Uruguay require his services.
Ultimately however, Bielsa opted for a different direction.
Bielsa's call also puts an end to public hopes of seeing one of Uruguay's all-time top goalscorers feature at the 2026 World Cup.
For many years, Suarez stood as an iconic symbol of La Celeste alongside the Golden Generation that established Uruguay as a contender at the highest level of World Football.
Instead, Bielsa has retained the core group of players that form the backbone of his long-term project. In midfield, Uruguay will continue to rely on Manuel Ugarte.
The Manchester United player is one of three Premier League representatives named in the final squad, alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Santiago Bueno and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.
Darwin Nunez has also been entrusted with a place in the squad. Despite the striker going through a difficult spell at club level and having received very limited playing minutes over recent months, Bielsa still included him in the World Cup squad.
The former Liverpool forward, who currently plays for Al-Hilal, has not made a single appearance in the Saudi Pro League since February.
This situation arose after the club was forced to adjust their foreign player quota following the arrival of former Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema.
Even so, Bielsa remains convinced that Nunez possesses the quality and experience that Uruguay needs.
This decision from Bielsa reflects the new path Uruguay is currently building. La Celeste is now transitioning away from the era of their legendary players, moving towards a younger, promising yet still competitive generation.
Uruguay have been drawn into Group H alongside Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde and Spain. Their campaign will kick off on 15 June against Saudi Arabia, before they face Cape Verde and then tournament favourites Spain.
Suarez's absence will undoubtedly leave a large void within the Uruguay squad, both in terms of experience and leadership. Nevertheless, Bielsa's decision sends a clear message that Uruguay is ready to turn a new page and head into the 2026 World Cup with a refreshed identity.
