Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has once again etched a golden milestone in the club's history after successfully retaining their Champions League title. Les Parisiens emerged as champions after defeating Arsenal via a dramatic penalty shootout with a 4-3 scoreline, in the final match held at Puskás Aréna, Budapest, Hungary on Sunday, 30 May 2026.

This pinnacle fixture of Europe's elite Football competition was fiercely contested over 120 minutes. Both sides remained deadlocked at 1-1 before the winner was ultimately decided through the penalty shootout round.

This success sees PSG claim consecutive Champions League titles, having also lifted the famous trophy the prior season. This achievement further solidifies the French club's standing as one of the dominant forces in European Football.

Arsenal opened the scoring just five minutes into the match. A clearance from Marquinhos deflected into the path of Leandro Trossard, before the ball fell for Kai Havertz.

The German striker drove into the penalty area before firing a powerful low strike from a tight angle that evaded PSG Goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, putting Arsenal 1-0 ahead.

This early goal prompted PSG to raise their attacking intensity. Chances were carved out by Fabian Ruiz, Ousmane Dembélé and Desire Doue, but Arsenal's compact defensive structure kept the score unchanged through the mid-point of the first half.

Arsenal themselves came close to doubling their advantage in the 26th minute. Bukayo Saka's cross picked out Leandro Trossard, but Safonov reacted sharply off his line to snuff out the opportunity.

As the first half entered its closing stages, PSG continued to apply sustained pressure. Dembélé unleashed a fierce shot that was blocked by Gabriel Magalhães, while a string of other half-chances failed to produce a goal.

Arsenal held their 1-0 lead heading into the half-time interval.

After the restart, PSG played with far greater aggression as they hunted for an equaliser. Achraf Hakimi went close with a 55th minute free kick, only for David Raya to produce a fine save.

PSG's defining moment arrived in the 62nd minute. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was fouled by Cristhian Mosquera inside the penalty box whilst running onto Dembélé's through pass.

Following a VAR review of the incident, the referee awarded PSG a penalty kick.

Stepping up as the designated taker, Dembélé converted the spot kick flawlessly. The 2025 Ballon d'Or winner placed the ball perfectly into the bottom left corner, leaving Raya completely rooted to the spot.

This 64th minute strike levelled the score at 1-1 and injected renewed momentum into PSG's performance.

After drawing level, PSG grew in confidence. Vitinha tested Raya with a long-range effort, while Kvaratskhelia came within inches of turning the game when his shot cannoned off the goal frame.

At the opposite end, Arsenal made a series of attacking substitutions, introducing Jurrien Timber, Viktor Gyökeres, Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke to increase their forward threat.

Despite both sides creating further openings, the score remained level at the end of normal time, sending the match into extra time.

Both teams adopted a more cautious approach during extra time. Raya denied PSG on multiple occasions, while Arsenal almost snatched a late winner when Timber's angled strike drifted just wide of the far post.

With no additional goals registered across the full 120 minutes, the fixture proceeded to a penalty shootout.

PSG displayed champion mentality during this high-pressure phase. Gonçalo Ramos, Desire Doue, Achraf Hakimi and Lucas Beraldo all converted their spot kicks successfully. Only Nuno Mendes failed to find the net for the French side.

For Arsenal, Viktor Gyökeres, Declan Rice and Gabriel Martinelli scored their penalties. However, both Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhães failed to convert their attempts.

Gabriel Magalhães' miss with the final kick of the shootout confirmed PSG's 4-3 penalty victory, securing Les Parisiens back-to-back Champions League crowns.
