Spain national team has officially announced their 26-player squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, with a major surprise: no Real Madrid players have been called up. Head Coach Luis de la Fuente's decision has drawn massive attention, as Real Madrid's eternal rivals FC Barcelona completely dominate La Furia Roja's final squad list.
De la Fuente opted not to select Dani Carvajal and Dean Huijsen for football's biggest global tournament.
By contrast, Barcelona is the club with the most representatives, contributing 8 players to the Spain national squad: Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Gavi, Pau Cubarsí, Ferran Torres, Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, and Dani Olmo.

This Barcelona dominance reflects the massive influence of Blaugrana's young generation within De la Fuente's long-term project for the national team.
Yamal, Pedri and Gavi are expected to form the core foundation of Spain's playing style during the tournament which will be hosted across United States, Canada and Mexico.
"The hardest part of this job is leaving out players who have been part of this group, or players who absolutely deserve a place based on their quality. We will keep working, and I am certain we will cross paths again one day," De la Fuente stated via the official Spain national team website.
After Barcelona, the next clubs with the most call ups are Athletic Club, Atlético Madrid and Arsenal, each contributing 3 players to La Furia Roja's squad.
Between the posts, Spain will continue to rely on the experience of Unai Simón and David Raya. Meanwhile, the defensive line combines senior figures such as Aymeric Laporte and Marc Cucurella alongside young prospect Pau Cubarsi.
Midfield remains Spain's main strength, boasting players including Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Pedri, Gavi and Martin Zubimendi.
De la Fuente has retained the team's signature identity of creative build-up play and ball possession, the same formula that delivered Spain the UEFA Euro 2024 title.
Up front, Spain have selected a mix of pacey, aggressive forwards: Ferran Torres, Nico Williams, Yeremy Pino and Lamine Yamal.
Even though Spain enter the tournament as one of the pre-tournament favourites, De la Fuente stressed that this favoured status does not guarantee an easy run at the 2026 World Cup.
"We believe we have what it takes to win the World Cup, but that guarantees nothing. There are other teams at the same level that are also strong title contenders," said the coach who led Spain to European Championship glory in 2024.
For the 2026 World Cup, Spain have been drawn into Group H alongside Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
Spain will open their campaign against Cape Verde on 15 June, before facing Saudi Arabia on 21 June, then conclude their group stage matches against Uruguay.
The absence of Real Madrid players will undoubtedly spark prolonged debate across Spain. However, De la Fuente appears focused on preserving the on-pitch chemistry that has already proven successful, built around Barcelona's new generation and the core of the 2024 European Championship winning squad.
