Brazil National Team head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, has revealed the reasoning behind his decision to recall Neymar to the Selecao squad. Ancelotti believes the superstar still possesses the quality to make a major impact for Brazil at the 2026 World Cup.
According to the former Real Madrid manager, Neymar is not merely a backup player, but a figure capable of making a difference within the team.
"You do not call Neymar because we think he would make a good reserve player. You call him because he can bring quality to this team, regardless of how many minutes he ends up getting on the pitch," Ancelotti stated via the official CBF website on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.

"We select these players to be able to contribute to the team. How long he will play? I cannot say," added the former Real Madrid coach.
Neymar last represented Brazil on 17 October 2023 against Uruguay in a 2026 World Cup Qualifier match. Following that fixture, the former FC Barcelona player was sidelined for an extended period due to injury and fitness issues.
Neymar's return is positive news for the Selecao squad, who are currently in need of senior leadership within the dressing room. The 34-year-old's experience and mental fortitude are considered vital to help the team handle the pressure of a major tournament.
Should he feature at the 2026 World Cup, Neymar will make his fourth appearance at global football's most prestigious competition. He previously represented Brazil at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions of the tournament.
Brazil are set to face stiff competition during the 2026 World Cup group stage. The Samba Team are scheduled to face Morocco, Haiti and Scotland as they pursue their next World Cup title.
