Cristiano Ronaldo's defeat with Al Nassr in the 2025-2026 AFC Champions League Two final has reignited the long-running debate over his rivalry with Lionel Messi: between the two players, who has lost more career finals?
Al Nassr fell 0-1 to Gamba Osaka in the ACL 2 final hosted at Al Awwal Park, early Sunday morning WIB. Deniz Hummet's 29th minute match-winner dashed Ronaldo's ambition of lifting his first major Asian trophy since transferring to Saudi Arabia.
This result marks the 15th final that Ronaldo has failed to win across his professional club and international career between 2002 and 2026.

Al-Nassr failed to win the AFC Champions League 2 title, Cristiano Ronaldo once again remains trophy-less.
Over three and a half seasons at Al Nassr, the Portuguese forward has now suffered four separate final defeats.
Prior to this match, Ronaldo was unable to deliver silverware for Al Nassr after losses to Al Hilal and Al Ahli in the Saudi Super Cup, followed by another final defeat against Al Hilal in the King's Cup.
Ronaldo's total final losses now surpass Messi's record, who has been beaten 13 times in decisive matches throughout his career.
Ronaldo's difficult history in finals began during his spell at Sporting CP, when he missed out on the 2003 Portuguese Cup title following defeat to FC Porto.
One year later, Ronaldo endured another crushing loss as Portugal were beaten by Greece on home soil in the Euro 2004 final.
During his tenure at Manchester United, Ronaldo suffered three final defeats. Two of these came in the 2005 and 2007 FA Cup finals, against Arsenal and Chelsea respectively.
His most painful final loss occurred in the 2008-2009 UEFA Champions League final, where Manchester United were defeated by a Barcelona side still featuring Lionel Messi.
Even while lifting numerous trophies during his spells at Real Madrid and Juventus, Ronaldo continued to experience final defeats.
Across his 2009-2018 stint at Real Madrid, he finished on the losing side four times in Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup finals, against Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
After moving to Juventus, Ronaldo suffered further final losses: against Lazio in the 2019 Italian Super Cup, and versus Napoli in the 2020 Coppa Italia final.
Messi holds the statistical advantage in finals. The Argentina National Team captain has secured 48 career trophies to date, compared to Ronaldo's 35.
Messi has lost 13 finals in total. Eight of these defeats came during his time at Barcelona, across Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup and UEFA Super Cup fixtures.
One of Messi's most high-profile final setbacks was the 2014 FIFA World Cup final, where Argentina were defeated by Germany.
Messi also finished on the losing side with Argentina in the 2007, 2015 and 2016 Copa América finals. His most recent final loss came while playing for Inter Miami CF, against Houston Dynamo FC in the 2023 US Open Cup.
Though both legends have experienced the bitter taste of final defeat, the rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi remains one of the greatest in the history of modern football.
