Mataram — Its status as a UNESCO Global Geopark means Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) has never lost its allure. During the mid-May 2026 long public Holiday, this second-highest active Volcano in Indonesia successfully drew 1,505 hikers within only three days.

This number marks a positive growth trend for NTB Tourism. The Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) authority recorded a significant increase of 289 visitors compared to the prior week, which only reached 1,216 total arrivals.

Astekita, Head of Administrative Subdivision for TNGR NTB, detailed that Rinjani's magnetism attracts both domestic and international markets. From the total visits recorded 14–16 May 2026, 540 were Overseas Visitors, while the remaining 965 were local hikers.

"Arrivals peaked on the first day of the long holiday, Thursday, with 587 hikers, then tapered slightly on the following days," stated Astekita in Mataram on Sunday (17/5/2026). Thousands of hikers were distributed across six official trails: Sembalun, Senaru, Torean, Timbanuh, Tetebatu, and Aik Berik.

Local authorities have responded properly to this high public enthusiasm. Budhy Kurniawan, Head of TNGR NTB, revealed that the management is currently constructing eco-friendly rest shelters equipped with solar panels along all hiking routes. These facilities are prepared as sturdy emergency shelter points for hikers to take refuge from the rapid Extreme Weather shifts that commonly occur on the mountain.

Mount Rinjani stands majestically at 3726 meters above sea level, and administratively spans across three regions: North Lombok Regency, East Lombok Regency, and West Lombok Regency. Aside from its summit, the core attraction that lures thousands of adventurers is Segara Anak Lake. This giant caldera lake located at 2000 meters above sea level presents magical panoramic views, with the still-active Barujari volcanic cone standing right at its centre.
