Amid the bustle of Japan's largest fish market, a giant bluefin tuna has once again rewritten the country's Culinary History. This is not only due to its 243 kilogram weight, but also its staggering price tag of 510.3 million yen, equivalent to approximately 50 billion Indonesian Rupiah.
This record-breaking purchase was made by renowned sushi restaurant chain Sushizanmai, owned by Kiyomura Corporation, during the first annual fish auction of 2026 at Toyosu Market, Tokyo. Guinness World Records has officially certified this catch as the Most Expensive Tuna ever sold at public auction.
"The Most Expensive Tuna sold at auction is a bluefin tuna acquired for 510,300,000 Japanese yen by Sushizanmai of Kiyomura Corporation (Japan) at the annual opening fish auction held at Toyosu Market, Koto, Tokyo, Japan on 5 January 2026," reads the official statement published on the Guinness World Records website.
For Japanese society, the opening new year fish auction is never merely a business transaction. It also functions as a prestigious cultural event that consistently draws attention from the general public and international media alike.
This giant bluefin tuna was caught in open waters off the coast of Oma, Aomori Prefecture. This region is globally recognised as the source of the world's finest quality tuna, while Oma itself has long been synonymous with premium flavour and uncompromising standard within Japanese sushi culture.
News of this legendary tuna spread rapidly across every district of Tokyo. Once the auction concluded, the fish was transported to Sushizanmai's flagship outlet in the Tsukiji district to be butchered and prepared for customers.
The ceremonial cutting of the giant tuna became a standalone public attraction. Onlookers gathered to watch the multi-billion rupiah fish be transformed into fresh sushi portions, which were then distributed to all Sushizanmai branches across Japan.
Kiyoshi Kimura, President of Kiyomura Corporation, received the official Guinness World Records certificate in April 2026 at the company's flagship Tsukiji premises.
"We will continue to source and serve the highest quality tuna next year, and for many years ahead," Kimura stated.
This is not the first time Sushizanmai has made auction history at Tokyo's tuna markets. Back in 2013, the company also broke the record after purchasing a tuna for 155.4 million yen, equivalent to approximately 16.8 billion Indonesian Rupiah. That figure now pales in comparison to the dramatic price surges recorded in recent years.
Data published by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirms premium tuna prices have climbed sharply year on year. The highest winning bid stood at just 36 million yen in 2023, before jumping to 114 million yen in 2024 and 270 million yen in 2025. The 2026 record is therefore the highest price ever registered since official auction tracking began in 1999.
Remarkably, despite the astronomical price tag and global media spotlight, customers are still able to order sushi prepared from this record tuna at regular standard prices. This has made the experience of tasting the world's most expensive tuna all the more unforgettable for culinary enthusiasts.
