The resurgence of Manchester United in the second half of the 2025/2026 Premier League season is set to have major implications for the club's head coaching position. Michael Carrick, originally appointed only as interim manager, is now reportedly growing ever closer to being handed the permanent Manchester United job.

This news was first revealed by renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. According to Romano, club management believes Carrick is the right figure to lead United long-term, after successfully lifting the team's performance since taking charge last January.

Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim mid-season amid a difficult slump. However, the former United midfielder quickly turned the club's campaign around. Across 15 matches under Carrick's leadership, Manchester United have only suffered two defeats, recorded 10 wins, and drawn the remaining three games.

"Manchester United and Michael Carrick will continue together next season and beyond. This prospect has strengthened significantly over recent weeks as reported, and everyone at MUFC agrees he should stay," Romano posted via his official X account on Wednesday.

United's impressive form under Carrick has seen the Red Devils return to contention at the top of the league table. With two matches remaining, United sit in 3rd place on 65 points, and have already secured their place in next season's UEFA Champions League.

This success marks a major milestone for Manchester United, as this will be the club's first return to the Champions League since the 2023/2024 campaign.

That previous European campaign ended in disappointing fashion. Drawn into Group A alongside Bayern Munich, FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray, United finished dead last with just 4 total points.

The situation looks entirely different now. Under Carrick, Manchester United have re-established a stable, competitive playing identity. Players are performing with visibly greater confidence, while consistent results have once again become the norm at Old Trafford.

"The players, management, everyone is aligned. Next steps: final stage negotiations and a new formal agreement," Romano added.

Alongside confirming Champions League qualification, United still hold a realistic chance of finishing the season inside the top three of the Premier League standings. Holding a six point advantage over Liverpool and Aston Villa, this outcome remains firmly on the cards.

To secure third place, the Red Devils will need to win their final two fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion, while also hoping both Liverpool and Aston Villa fail to pick up maximum points from their remaining matches.

If he can maintain this momentum, Michael Carrick will not only have rescued Manchester United's season - he will also have launched an entirely new era at Old Trafford as the club's permanent first team manager.
