Jakarta and Kelantan strengthen regional ties through cooperation projected to unlock significant opportunities in the economic and tourism sectors. One key step is the plan to launch direct Kota Bharu–Jakarta flights starting June 2026.

This new connectivity is expected to facilitate mobility for Indonesian tourists and Malaysians while opening new Alternative Destinations in Southeast Asia

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government views this Flight Route not just as transportation access, but also as a bridge for trade growth, investment, and Cultural Exchange.

DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo stated this cooperation holds great potential, noting the Jakarta agglomeration area has a market of up to 42 million people.

"Certainly, Jakarta will become a new destination for Kelantan residents, and likewise for Jakarta residents wanting to visit Kelantan. Today he led a delegation to Jakarta, coinciding with Kelantan Day in Jakarta tomorrow, May 14th," said Pramono after receiving the visit of Kelantan Chief Minister Mohd Nassuruddin Daud at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday.

According to Pramono, Kelantan has the potential to become an Alternative Destination for Jakarta residents who have traditionally chosen Penang when visiting Malaysia. One of the region's main attractions is its competitive healthcare services with relatively affordable costs.

"So far, Jakarta residents going to Malaysia mostly choose Penang; perhaps Kelantan can become a new alternative. One of Kelantan's advantages is its healthcare sector," explained Pramono.

Not only focused on economy and tourism, Jakarta and Kelantan are also beginning to explore collaboration in education and culture. One agenda item is the development and excavation of ancient Malay manuscripts, which are historical heritage for both regions.

"Jakarta and Kelantan are committed to opening broader collaboration in investment, education, and culture. We are also opening cooperation to develop and excavate ancient Malay manuscripts between Jakarta and Kelantan, as both possess extraordinary resources," elaborated Pramono.

Meanwhile, Mohd Nassuruddin Daud said his visit to Jakarta was part of Kelantan's major promotion to the Indonesian public ahead of the launch of these direct flights.

"We came here to promote the State of Kelantan because starting June 16th, there will be direct flights from Kelantan to Jakarta. Additionally, Kelantan is long known for its many Islamic boarding schools and study centers," said Mohd Nassuruddin.

Kelantan itself offers a combination of natural tourism, authentic Malay cuisine, and strong historical value due to its direct border with Thailand. The presence of direct Flight Routes is expected to make this destination increasingly accessible to tourists from Indonesia.

"This meeting is hoped to be the initial step towards establishing sustainable collaboration between Jakarta and Kelantan across various mutually beneficial sectors," he concluded.
