Indonesia's National Team will face a tough test in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 group stage in Saudi Arabia. In the opening match, the Garuda Squad will play against Japan at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sport City on January 11, 2027.
Indonesia is grouped in Group F with two Asian powerhouses, Japan and Qatar, before closing the group stage against regional rivals Thailand.
The match against Japan presents a major challenge, considering Japan is one of the most successful teams in Asian Cup history.

This will be Indonesia's fourth meeting with Japan in the last three years. Previously, Garuda lost 1-3 in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar under coach Shin Tae-yong. Indonesia's only goal in that match was scored by Sandy Walsh.
The subsequent two encounters occurred during the third round of 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. Indonesia lost 0-4 under Shin Tae-yong and suffered another 0-6 defeat during the era of coach Patrick Kluivert.
After facing Japan, Indonesia will play another difficult match against Qatar on January 16 at Aramco Stadium. Qatar holds defending champion status and has won the Asian Cup twice.
The packed schedule and opponents' quality place Indonesia in one of the tournament's toughest groups. However, duels against Japan and Qatar also provide crucial opportunities to measure Garuda's development at Asia's highest level.
Indonesia will then play its final group match against Thailand on January 20 at the 60,000-capacity King Abdullah Sports City.
The competition format allows the top two teams from each group and four best third-placed teams to advance to the knockout stage, played from January 22-25.
The tournament continues with quarterfinals on January 28-29, semifinals on February 1-2, and the final on February 5 at King Fahd Sports City.
Indonesia enters the 2027 Asian Cup with newfound history after advancing past the group stage for the first time in the 2023 edition, before being eliminated by Australia in the round of 16.
Indonesia's National Team Coach John Herdman considers this tournament vital for Garuda's development toward larger targets.
"This group stage will be highly competitive for Indonesia. It will be a significant challenge, but also a major opportunity for us to continue growing as a nation and show supporters we're on the right path toward the 2030 World Cup," said Herdman.
