A fierce duel unfolded in the battle for the UFC middleweight title when Sean Strickland managed to defeat Khamzat Chimaev via split decision in a tightly contested five-round fight.

From the first round, Chimaev immediately displayed aggression by relying on his grappling skills. He successfully executed a quick takedown and controlled Strickland's back position. In the opening minutes, Chimaev continuously sought opportunities to attempt submissions.

Despite constant pressure, Strickland demonstrated solid defense. He worked to escape dangerous positions and made several attempts to reverse the situation, but Chimaev maintained dominance in ground fighting.

Near the end of the first round, Chimaev attempted a neck crank on Strickland. However, the American fighter survived until the round bell sounded.

Entering the second round, the duel became more balanced. Both fighters engaged in stand-up fighting for the first minute and a half before Chimaev attempted another takedown. This effort was successfully defended by Strickland.

That successful defense became Strickland's turning point. He gained dominant position when the fight went to the ground and unleashed hard punches that disrupted Chimaev's rhythm.

In the third round, Chimaev appeared more cautious. He didn't immediately force takedowns as before, instead choosing to engage in striking exchanges. Intense stand-up fighting continued throughout the round with both fighters landing clean attacks.

The fight intensified when Strickland's nose started bleeding from received punches. Chimaev also showed visible facial damage.

The fourth round featured more standing exchanges. Chimaev pressed forward aggressively but only attempted a takedown in the final minute. He succeeded in taking Strickland down but failed to create submission threats before the round ended.

In the decisive fifth round, Chimaev came out aggressively with an early takedown, pinning Strickland against the octagon fence. But Strickland didn't just defend - he countered with several effective strikes.

When the fight returned to standing position, Strickland landed significant punches that reopened Chimaev's facial wounds. After five rounds, the judges rendered their decision.

Two judges scored the bout 48-47 for Strickland, while one judge awarded Chimaev the same score. This result secured Sean Strickland's UFC middleweight championship victory via split decision.
