Megastar Lionel Messi stated Argentina is not the sole favorite to win the FIFA 2026 World Cup. With roughly one month until the tournament kicks off, The Flea believes the race for the world trophy will be much more open compared to four years ago.

Argentina's status as defending Champion and top of the FIFA Ranking for over two years certainly makes La Albiceleste favorites again. However, Messi believes several major European and South American powers arrive with quality capable of thwarting Lionel Scaloni's team's ambition to retain the title.

In an interview with Pollo Alvarez, quoted by Siempre Con Argentina, Messi specifically pointed to France, Spain, Brazil, and Portugal as serious threats in North America.

“We must realize that there are many other strong teams who are also coming in very good condition,” said Messi.

“France are now very strong again because they have many great players at the highest level.”

“Spain and Brazil may have had inconsistent performances, but they remain big teams that are always dangerous.”

“Portugal also has a very competitive squad,” continued the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.

The inclusion of Portugal in Messi's list of favorites drew attention in the World Football community. The presence of Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portugal squad means the rivalry between the two icons of modern Football is once again in the spotlight ahead of the world's biggest tournament.

Messi believes France remains the main threat due to their squad depth across almost all positions. Meanwhile, Spain and Brazil remain dangerous despite experiencing inconsistent performances in recent periods.

Portugal has shown significant development throughout 2025. The combination of young players and the experience of their seniors makes them seen as a team capable of creating a major surprise at the upcoming World Cup.

Amid discussions about the title race, one major puzzle still surrounds Messi's future with Argentina.

The 38-year-old captain has not confirmed whether he will play in the 2026 World Cup, as he is still considering his physical condition.

Coach Lionel Scaloni has left the decision entirely to his captain.

“I want Messi to keep playing in the World Cup because it's important for football, but the final decision is in his own hands.”

“Everything depends on his physical condition and how he feels later,” concluded Lionel Scaloni.
