Indonesia in same group as Vietnam in AFF U19 Cup 2026, Erick Thohir remains optimistic.

Indonesia U19 face a tough challenge in the 2026 AFF U19 Cup after the draw placed the Garuda Muda squad in the same group as Vietnam. However, PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir remains confident in the chances of the squad coached by Nova Arianto.

The drawing ceremony held in Medan on Thursday placed Indonesia in Group A alongside Vietnam, Timor Leste, and Myanmar.

Indonesia was previously in Pot 1 alongside Thailand and Australia.

The draw was conducted by PSMS Medan legend, Iwan Karo-Karo.

Host status has increased expectations for Indonesia. Moreover, the match against Vietnam is predicted to be the decisive fixture in the race for a ticket to the next round. 

The rivalry between the two nations in recent years also ensures the match will capture the attention of the Southeast Asian public.

Meanwhile, Group B consists of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam. Australia joins Cambodia and the Philippines in Group C.

The tournament involves 11 nations and will take place from June 1-14, 2026, under the title ASEAN U19 Boy's Bank Sumut Championship 2026. 

This event serves as a crucial platform for young ASEAN players to showcase their quality before stepping up to the senior level.

Amidst the intense competition ahead, Erick Thohir urged the Indonesian players to be confident and unafraid to face any opponent.

"As a National Team, we shouldn't lose before the match even starts," he stated.

Erick also reaffirmed his belief in the capability of the young Indonesian squad under coach Nova Arianto's guidance. 

He stated that the coaching staff and players would give their maximum performance to meet the expectations of the host nation's public.

"We give them our full trust. If it's PSSI, surely the best will come," he concluded.
