Indonesia faces a major challenge when they meet Australia in the semi-finals of the AFF U-19 Cup 2026. This fixture, hosted at North Sumatra Main Stadium, Deli Serdang on Thursday 11 June 2026 evening WIB, is not just a knockout duel for a place in the final, but also a tough test for coach Nova Arianto who has never secured a victory against the Young Socceroos.
Young Garuda advanced to the semi-final stage with high confidence after collecting maximum points during the group phase. Indonesia won all three of their group matches, beating Myanmar, Timor Leste and Vietnam to confirm their status as Group A winners.
On the other side, Australia is one of the dominant youth Football powers in the Asia-Pacific region. The Young Socceroos also qualified for the semi-finals as Group C champions, carrying clear ambition to continue their campaign towards the tournament title.

Indonesia in same group as Vietnam in AFF U19 Cup 2026, Erick Thohir remains optimistic.
Across his entire career as head coach for Indonesia's age-group national teams, Nova Arianto has faced Australia on two prior occasions and has never walked away with a win.
The first meeting occurred in the semi-finals of the 2024 AFF U-17 Cup. On that occasion, Indonesia were forced to admit Australia's superiority after falling to a dramatic 3-5 defeat.
A second opportunity came during the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2025 qualifiers. Indonesia played with tight discipline and held Australia scoreless. This 0-0 draw was sufficient for both teams to progress to the final tournament.
Now, two years after their first encounter, Nova once again lines up against the same opposition. This time, Indonesia will take to the pitch with a far more mature squad.
Young Garuda have received a significant boost to their squad strength with the addition of Mathew Baker. The 17-year-old player only recently completed international duty with the senior Indonesian National Team, who secured victories over Oman and Mozambique during the June 2026 FIFA Matchday window.
Baker's presence provides additional options in the defensive line, while also bringing senior international experience to Indonesia's young squad. This experience competing at senior level is expected to help Young Garuda handle the match pressure when facing Australia.
While Australia remain the favourites going into this fixture thanks to their established pedigree and player quality, Indonesia have solid grounds to approach this match with optimism.
Consistent form throughout the tournament, home crowd support, and the strong positive momentum they have built will be key assets as they look to finally break Nova Arianto's winless record against the Young Socceroos.
