The "paspoorgate" dispute involving Indonesian National Team player Dean James concluded after the Utrecht Court rejected NAC Breda's demand to replay the match against Go Ahead Eagles. This decision confirms the validity of Go Ahead Eagles' decisive 6-0 victory in the Eredivisie continuation.

NAC Breda's demand arose after Dean James was fielded in that match, amidst controversy over his citizenship status which changed after representing the Indonesian National Team. However, the court affirmed that competition authority remains with the federation.

"The competition management of the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) is entitled to decide that the match does not need to be replayed, even if one player was ineligible to play," stated the court ruling quoted from ESPN.

The court deemed the request for a replay disproportionate to the potential significant impact on the league schedule. The KNVB was considered to have made a rational decision, considering all involved parties.

In its considerations, the court also emphasized the extreme risk if the lawsuit was granted.

The KNVB could potentially have to reschedule up to 133 Eredivisie matches due to similar cases involving players without valid work permits, a scenario deemed unrealistic.

This case stems from the change in Dean James' citizenship status. Born in the Netherlands with Indonesian lineage, the 25-year-old player officially obtained an Indonesian passport last March and has recorded five appearances with the Garuda Squad.

However, Dutch law states that citizens who voluntarily acquire another citizenship will lose their Dutch citizenship status.

Consequently, James is no longer considered a European Union citizen and must meet stricter requirements to play in the Eredivisie.

With the issuance of this ruling, both NAC Breda and the KNVB agreed to end the legal dispute, closing the lengthy controversy that had threatened the stability of the Dutch League competition.
