The news of Iraq's national team qualifying for the 2026 World Cup was celebrated not only across the Middle East, but also echoed in Bandung. Persib Bandung coach Bojan Hodak felt particular pride for his protege, Frans Putros.

For Hodak, Putros' involvement in Iraq's journey to Football's grandest stage proves both the player's quality and perseverance throughout his long career.

"As I said, it's great to have a player at the World Cup. It's especially meaningful for him since he's over 30 now – this might be his last opportunity," Hodak stated, as quoted from Persib's official website on Thursday.

Iraq secured their finals ticket after defeating Bolivia 2-1 in the intercontinental playoff final of 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

This victory ended their four-decade wait since their last World Cup appearance.

Though the 32-year-old defender remained on the bench during the decisive match – unused despite coach Graham Arnold making five substitutions – his contributions during the qualifiers remained vital to the Lions of Mesopotamia's success story.

Hodak hopes Putros' journey continues, wanting him included in Iraq's final squad for the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada this June.

"Playing in the World Cup is every player's dream," he emphasized.

Since his August 2018 debut, Putros has earned 25 caps for Iraq, including appearances against Indonesia's national team during the 2023 Asian Cup group stage in Qatar. His international experience provides crucial preparation for the global stage.

His last appearance came during October's fourth-round qualifier against Saudi Arabia, which ended goalless. Now, with Iraq's World Cup ticket secured, only one step remains: securing his spot in the final squad.
