Lately, city skies feel like an oven. Jakarta, for example, is predicted to hover around 25–34° C with often cloudy weather, yet sometimes "feels hotter" due to high UV indexes. During the day, the air feels 'oppressive', making steps heavy and relaxing moments outdoors quickly tiring.

Amidst the sun's grill, have you ever thought about escaping briefly to a cool place? Indonesia has a multitude of chilly locations still within reach, places where the air feels different, cooler and more refreshing.

Walking out of the big city, passing steaming hot roads towards mountain foothills, in mountain villages, above misty valleys. The sky there is brighter without the stinging heat. Leaves on the trees move slowly, the sound of the wind friendly company.

Here, on this escape journey from the city's scorch, are seven cool destinations in Indonesia that can be the chillest spots when the sun turns fierce.

1. Dieng, Central Java

The journey to Dieng starts with climbing winding roads, getting higher and colder. Local data shows temperatures in Dieng range between 12–20 °C during the day, and can drop to 6–10 °C at night. Even in extreme dry season, temperatures have been recorded as low as minus 1.7 °C on certain mornings.

Imagine arriving at the heights at dawn, mist enveloping, air gently stinging the skin. You can wake up before dawn, trek to Sikunir Hill to witness the "Golden Sunrise", then traverse the Savanna Field with cool air caressing your cheeks. As noon approaches, the air remains comfortable, unlike the city where 30 °C feels scorching. At night? Blankets and warm tea become companions before sleep.

If you still have enough time, stamina, and preparation, you can try climbing Mount Prau's peak to enjoy the beautiful sunrise greeting warmly amidst the green grassy expanse of Teletubbies Hill, while witnessing the stunning natural pairing of Mount Sumbing and Sindoro.

2. Lembang and Bandung Highlands, West Java

Not far from the big city, Lembang and the Bandung highlands offer a cool escape without having to go far to another island. In the morning, temperatures can touch around 18–22 °C (depending on weather). Light trekking to tea plantation areas, walking to Floating Market or Farmhouse, enjoying thin mist and fresh air – it all feels like a new breath from the city bustle.

4. Berastagi, North Sumatra

Berastagi, situated at the foot of Mount Sinabung and Mount Sibayak, is known as a city with fresh air. Early in the morning, mist often descends, covering this small town. Temperatures can range between 16–22 °C, depending on the season and area.

Exploring Berastagi's unique fruit market, or hiking to Sibayak's peak to witness the sunrise above an ocean of clouds becomes a more vivid experience when the body isn't burning from heat.

5. Ruteng and Bajawa, East Nusa Tenggara

Stepping onto Flores Island, we find Ruteng and Bajawa as escapes from the heat. BMKG (Meteorology Agency) records show that in Ruteng, temperatures range from 18–26 °C with high humidity. Don't be surprised if mornings arrive with thin mist covering the valleys.

In Bajawa, traditional villages, natural hot springs, and towering mountain landscapes make the journey feel like a fairy tale in reality. The air feels more 'friendly' while you're exploring.

6. Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi

In the hills of Tana Toraja, coolness is part of daily life. Data from BMKG indicates temperatures between 18–27 °C, depending on the time and location.

You can arrive as evening approaches, watch the mist descend into the valley, wander through stone villages, see unique traditions, then enjoy a cold night under a sky full of stars. The mountain breeze and small candles in traditional houses create a magical backdrop hard to forget.
