The new era of the Indonesian National Team under John Herdman begins by building the future without forgetting past foundations. Ahead of his Fifa Series debut, Herdman acknowledged Shin Tae-yong and Patrick Kluivert who helped build the Garuda Squad foundation.

“You know, great work from Shin Tae-yong, great work from Patrick Kluivert. Every coach adds something to this team, their identity,” said Herdman during a press conference at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, Thursday.

For the English coach, a national team's journey doesn't always start from scratch but can develop existing legacies.

He sees Shin Tae-yong's defensive organization and Kluivert's more expansive attacking approach as crucial elements.

“As a coach, you work with existing foundations. Shin Tae-yong implemented fantastic defensive structures, Patrick brought a more expansive style. My job is taking this to the next level,” he explained.

This approach will face its first test when Indonesia plays St Kitts and Nevis at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, Friday, March 27, 2026.

Herdman aims to develop a playing style reflecting Indonesia's national character.

“A national identity should represent your people. Indonesians are hard workers with artistic spirit, kinship and unity,” said the coach who led Canada to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“These elements will define our playing style. Previous Indonesian teams showed defensive resilience, compactness and solidity I admire,” he added.

However, Herdman noted areas needing improvement: attacking transitions and tactical organization for more dynamism.

He emphasized that adaptability is no longer optional but essential in modern football.

“In today's international football, you must adapt – pre-game, during matches, and between matches. You'll see this philosophy in our play,” he concluded.
