When the distance between two countries can be covered in a short time, geographical boundaries feel like an illusion. By the end of 2026, cross-border travel between Johor Bahru and Singapore will change drastically. The arrival of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is designed to slash travel time to just five minutes.
As reported by CNA, the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Train is designed to reduce congestion while enhancing connectivity between Johor Bharu, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Johor has long been synonymous with vehicle queues at the border. This project offers a new experience of crossing countries as quickly as waiting for a traffic light to turn green.

Trains will depart from Woodlands North MRT Station to Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru and vice versa, with a minimum interval (headway) of 3.6 minutes.
A joint press statement from the Singapore Ministry of Transport and Malaysia stated that eight train sets are scheduled to begin operations in December 2026.
For travelers, five minutes isn't just a number. It could mean having laksa breakfast in Singapore and seafood lunch in Johor without planning a journey lasting hours.
According to Time Out, the first train will depart from each station at 06:00, while the last train will leave at 00:00 daily. This schedule provides flexibility for tourists wanting to enjoy evenings in two different cities within one day.
Above the Johor Strait, the rail bridge connecting Bukit Chagar and Woodlands North will become a new icon of Southeast Asian Mobility.
Each train can carry over 600 passengers per trip, with a maximum capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour per direction.
This number isn't just a transport statistic, but a promise of reduced vehicle congestion that has long been a cross-border challenge between the two countries.
Despite the drastically reduced travel time, cross-country procedures still apply. Passengers will undergo immigration checks just like when visiting another country.
Approximately 100 AI-based electronic entry gates will be installed at stations to speed up immigration clearance to just seven seconds.
There will also be 10 security screening lanes, 18 baggage scanners, and a special lane for those Traveling without luggage.
From a Tourism perspective, the RTS Link enables practical and affordable daily cross-country travel.
After operating for six months, this route is scheduled to replace the KTM Shuttle Tebrau service (Woodlands Checkpoint - JB Sentral route) in June 2027.
Passengers of the Malaysia-Singapore Fast Train will be charged SGD 5-7 (approximately Rp66,000 - Rp92,000) one way.
However, this fare hasn't been officially finalized until the later stages of 2026.
Compared to car travel costs which can reach SGD 50 (around Rp662,000) per day, this rail journey is far more economical while opening cross-border tourism opportunities for more people.
When Malaysia-Singapore takes just five minutes, travel is no longer about distance, but a choice of experiences.
At the rail's end, two cultures, two urban landscapes, and two pulses of life await exploration.
