City appeared aggressive from the opening whistle. The high pressure applied by the home team yielded quick results. In the 14th minute, Nico O’Reilly opened the scoring after capitalizing on a precise pass from Omar Marmoush. His shot was touched by Goalkeeper Nick Pope, but the ball still rolled into the net, changing the score to 1-0.
That lead didn't last long. Eight minutes later, Newcastle managed to equalize 1-1 through a Lewis Hall goal, finished from a Jacob Ramsey assist.
However, Manchester City again showed a quick response. In the 27th minute, O’Reilly scored his second goal with an accurate header after receiving a pass from Erling Haaland. This goal also secured a 2-1 lead for the hosts.
Newcastle breached the City goal just before halftime through a Dan Burn header. However, after a VAR review, the goal was nullified for an offside position.
Entering the second half, Newcastle appeared more dominant in ball possession. Nevertheless, they struggled to penetrate City's disciplined defense. On the other hand, City's chances were also thwarted several times by Nick Pope.
In the final minutes, Newcastle almost equalized. A fierce strike by Harvey Barnes was barely tipped away by Donnarumma, preserving the hosts' lead.
Until the final whistle blew, the 2-1 score remained. This victory keeps Manchester City's hopes alive in the pursuit of the Premier League title this season.
