Persija Jakarta isn't merely adding a big name by signing Shayne Pattynama. Behind that decision, the Kemayoran Tigers are seeking the answer to their most crucial need in the long Super League competition: flexibility.
Persija coach Mauricio Souza openly stated that Shayne's ability to play in multiple positions was the main reason the club brought in the Indonesian National Team player.
Shayne is indeed known as a left-back, but his capacity extends far beyond just one role.

He can fill in at right-back, center-back, and various positions in midfield and on the left wing – a complete package rarely possessed by a single player.
"Pattynama is already with us. I've spoken briefly with him. But I know from other players that he can help us a lot in this league," said Mauricio in a press conference after Persija's 2-0 win over Madura United at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Friday, January 23, 2026.
For Persija, who are competing at the top of the table and have collected 38 points from 12 wins, the presence of a versatile player like Shayne opens up more tactical options.
Mauricio even named two specific positions the 27-year-old player could immediately fill.
"He can play as a defensive midfielder or a right-back. I spoke with him, I'm pleased with his motivation, I'm happy he has joined us," he said.
Shayne was announced as Persija's new signing on Friday afternoon, just hours before he watched his new teammates defeat Madura United.
He was brought in from Buriram United on a 2.5-year contract, completing Persija's transfer activity which had already recruited Fajar Fathurrahman, Alaaeddine Ajaraie, and Paulo Ricardo.
His arrival automatically means Persija now have three left-backs, alongside Dony Tri Pamungkas and Alan Cardoso.
This situation has sparked speculation about the possible departure of one player, particularly Cardoso. However, Mauricio chose to hold back.
"We will speak to journalists when there is a decision on who will leave. I know Cardoso since he was a kid, I was the one who brought him here," he stated.
Mauricio even emphasized that Cardoso's quality remains high in the eyes of the coaching staff.
"He is an extraordinary player. When he comes into a match, he always does well, today was also like that. We will announce later who leaves Persija," he added.
In the Persija dressing room, competition is seen as normal. Center-back Thales Lira believes the arrival of new players, including Paulo Ricardo who plays the same position as him, actually strengthens the team.
"In my opinion, all players coming to Persija must play well this season. There are many good players in midfield, defense, and attack. Who will play and the competition is normal within a team. Whoever plays must work hard and that's the coach's choice," said Thales.
