Real Madrid has made another major mid-season decision. Less than 24 hours after Madrid's painful defeat to their eternal rivals Barcelona in the 2026 Spanish Super Cup final, Los Blancos officially terminated their partnership with coach Xabi Alonso.

The 2-3 loss to Barcelona at King Abdullah Sport City Stadium, Jeddah, early Monday, January 12, 2026 WIB, became the turning point. Not only did Madrid fail to win the trophy, but they also trailed their rivals by four points in the LaLiga Standings.

In the early hours of Tuesday, January 13, 2026 WIB, Madrid announced Alonso's departure through an official statement.

"Real Madrid C. F. announces that a mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso has been reached to terminate his tenure as first team coach," wrote Madrid's official website.

The club emphasized this decision does not erase Alonso's status as a club legend.

"Xabi Alonso will always hold the affection and respect of all Madridismo as he is a Real Madrid legend who consistently represented our club's values. Real Madrid will always be his home."

Madrid also expressed appreciation for the coaching staff's contributions.

"Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire technical team for their hard work and dedication, wishing them success in the next stage of their lives," Madrid stated.

Behind these warm farewell sentiments, on-field realities spoke loudly. Madrid failed to dominate in crucial matches this season, including the final against Barcelona.

Public pressure and high expectations at Santiago Bernabeu made this defeat far more costly than merely losing one trophy.

Xabi Alonso arrived last summer and managed only 34 matches across all competitions. His record wasn't objectively poor—24 wins, four Draws, and six losses—but insufficient to guarantee stability at a club of Real Madrid's stature.

Arbeloa Promoted from Academy to the Hottest Seat

Madrid didn't take long to appoint a successor. Álvaro Arbeloa was entrusted to step up from Castilla to manage the first team.

This appointment isn't merely an emergency solution but also symbolizes continuity of Madrid's DNA. Arbeloa is a club academy product, though he joined at age 18 in 2001 after developing at Real Zaragoza.

He broke into the first team in 2004, was later loaned to Deportivo La Coruña, then found his place at Liverpool under Rafael Benítez.

In 2009, he returned to Madrid and remained for seven seasons until 2016, winning eight trophies including one LaLiga title and two Champions League titles.

Internationally, he was part of Spain's Golden Generation that won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012.

After retiring in 2017, Arbeloa returned to Madrid coaching youth levels from U-14 to U-19 before taking charge of Castilla in June 2025. With the reserve team, he recorded 10 wins, one draw, and eight losses in 19 matches.

Now, the 42-year-old faces his career's greatest challenge: managing a dressing room full of global stars while stabilizing a team that just lost its coach mid-season.

The High-Stakes Gamble Called Stability

Xabi Alonso's dismissal confirms one truth: at Real Madrid, time is not a luxury. Instant results remain the primary currency, especially when defeats come against the fiercest rival.

The spotlight now shifts to Arbeloa. Can he achieve what Alonso couldn't—unite egos, maintain stability, and return Madrid to the trophy path? Or will the Bernabéu pressure claim another victim?
