Amid growing global interest in finding places offering a balanced quality of life, Malaysia has made the list of the top 10 best countries to live in for 2026. This recognition comes from the latest International Living report, which assesses destinations not just by statistics, but by the real-life experiences of expatriates.
The report reveals the list of the 10 best countries to live in for 2026, with evaluations based on cost of living, healthcare, climate, infrastructure, Visa ease, and How easily newcomers adapt to local life.
Unlike conventional rankings, International Living combines data with field reports from correspondents living directly in these countries.

In this report, rent costs, healthcare quality, and daily expenses are calculated from the actual experiences of expatriates.
The result puts Greece in the top spot. For the first time, it has been crowned the best country to live in by International Living, displacing the dominance of Portugal and Spain.
The Mediterranean country is assessed as being at an ideal point thanks to its improving economy, quality healthcare at affordable costs, friendly visa system, and lower cost of living compared to many Western European nations.
Interestingly, Malaysia ranks within the top 10. The neighboring country is rated highly for its modern infrastructure and affordable cost of living for housing, food, and healthcare. This combination is increasingly sought after by retirees, remote workers, and expatriate families.
Ease of adaptation is another added value. English is widely used in various regions of Malaysia, reducing communication barriers for newcomers.
Additionally, long-term visa options are available for US citizens, making Malaysia an easily accessible destination for longer stays.
This year's report also offers a personal perspective from International Living's Malaysia correspondent, Keith Hockton, who has resided in the country for 12 years.
In his writing, he describes a simple yet meaningful daily life. According to him, Penang is a city that isn't overly busy. This city, he adds, isn't trying to sell a dream but offers a stable and generous way of life.
Hockton adds a reflection that sums up Malaysia's appeal for many expatriates:
"People often ask why I live here. My answer is always the same: what I get is far greater than what I sacrifice. In a world that demands so much, balance like this is rare and precious."
Malaysia's inclusion in this list affirms that quality of life is not always defined by luxury or excitement.
