The 3-1 victory over Myanmar in the final Group C match could not save Indonesia's journey in the football event of the 2025 SEA Games. The Young Garuda were still eliminated in the group stage, a result that ranks among Indonesia's worst achievements throughout its history of participation in the biennial event.
This result placed the Indonesian U-22 National Team in second position in Group C with three points, behind the Philippines as group winners.
Given these circumstances, the only remaining path was to vie for a semifinal ticket through the best runner-up route. However, that hope vanished after Indonesia finished below Malaysia due to inferior goal productivity.

This failure at the 2025 SEA Games also repeated the bitter history of 16 years ago. Prior to this edition, Indonesia had already been eliminated in the group stage six times: in 1983, 1995, 2003, 2007, and 2009.
This record confirms that Indonesia's journey at the SEA Games has not always been on the path of achievement, despite often arriving with favorite status.
Behind these poor results, Indonesian football still possesses a long history rich in accomplishments.
Since first participating in SEA Games men's football, Indonesia has collected a total of 13 medals. Three of them are gold, won in 1987, 1991, and 2023. This achievement places Indonesia as one of the traditional powers in the Southeast Asian region.
Besides the three golds, Indonesia has also won five silver medals and seven bronze medals.
This span of achievements reflects the dynamic performance of the Garuda from generation to generation, from eras of dominance to transitional phases that often ended in early-round failure.
The latest glory at the 2023 SEA Games, when Indonesia emerged as champions, had once raised hopes for long-term performance consistency.
However, Indonesia's elimination in the group stage of the 2025 SEA Games shows just how fluctuating the journey of national football has been at the regional level.
From gold medals to early elimination, the SEA Games has become a mirror of Indonesian football's journey. Full of ups and downs, rich in history, and always leaving homework for the next generation.
