The long-standing rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is once again in the spotlight, this time through a unique analogy from former Arsenal player Nicolas Pepe. He compared Messi and Ronaldo to two legendary characters from the anime Dragon Ball, Son Goku and Vegeta.
Messi and Ronaldo have been competing since 2007, the year they finished second and third in the Ballon d'Or behind Kaká.
After that, they dominated the world football stage. Messi now holds eight Ballon d'Or awards, while Ronaldo has five.

Harry Kane reaches 500 goals, trailing Lionel Messi but faster than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi's career journey is increasingly considered superior after he won the World Cup, the only achievement Ronaldo has never attained.
Many believe La Pulga (Messi) stands one level above his rival. Nicolas Pepe shares this view.
Goku vs Vegeta by Nicolas Pepe
In a discussion on the YouTube channel Just Riadh, Pepe likened Ronaldo to Vegeta—an ambitious character who constantly talks about his rival, Goku.
"Cristiano Ronaldo does many interviews and speaks extensively about Messi, revealing he's number two," said the Villarreal player.
"Know Dragon Ball Z? Vegeta always talks about that (his rival). And who doesn't talk much? Goku."
Pepe emphasized Vegeta's frustration with Goku perfectly mirrors how Ronaldo responds to Messi.
"Ronaldo has the same frustration (as Vegeta) because Messi is always ahead of him," he concluded.
The Final Era of Two Legends
Messi and Ronaldo are nearing the end of their careers. Messi has mentioned he might only spectate at the 2026 World Cup if unable to contribute meaningfully to Argentina.
Conversely, Ronaldo sees the tournament as his last chance to claim the Jules Rimet trophy.
As their careers advance, this football version of Goku vs Vegeta approaches its final act. Yet like the anime, the Messi-Ronaldo duel has forged an era unlikely to be repeated.
