Amid the process of transforming deserts into modern landscapes, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are preparing to enter a new chapter of future transportation. The two Gulf nations have officially announced plans to build an electric high-speed rail that will connect their two capitals, Riyadh and Doha.
As reported by Aljazeera, this ambitious project will link King Salman International Airport in Riyadh with Hamad International Airport in Doha. This strategic route promises major transformation for regional tourism.

Beyond connecting Riyadh and Doha, the line is projected to include Al Hofuf and Dammam cities, expanding connectivity in eastern Saudi Arabia.
The high-speed train is designed to operate at speeds exceeding 300 km/h, reducing Riyadh-Doha travel time to approximately two hours.
For context, direct flights between both cities take about 90 minutes or 1.5 hours.
High-speed rail travel offers a distinct experience: continuous desert landscapes, Gulf architectural modernity, and low-emission mobility aligned with the region's clean energy vision.
Six Years Toward Transportation Revolution
The project is planned for completion within six years. According to Aljazeera reports, the high-speed rail is projected to serve 10 million passengers annually while creating 30,000 jobs in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
These figures indicate the project transcends mere mobility, acting as an economic engine and cross-cultural journey facilitator.
The cooperation agreement was signed directly by two key regional figures—Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani—during a state visit to Riyadh.
This rail system is described as one of the most significant modern infrastructure developments ever undertaken by the two Gulf states.
Symbol of Bilateral Gulf Reconciliation
More than a transportation project, this rail represents a new phase in Saudi-Qatari relations.
In 2017, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt severed diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing Doha of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and aligning with Iran. Qatar vehemently denied these allegations.
Following formal reconciliation at Al Ula in January 2021, both nations gradually warmed relations.
Today, they've not only restored diplomacy but also collaborate on a mega-project that will reshape regional mobility.
The countries have further cooperated on diplomatic efforts, including supporting ceasefire calls in Gaza.
Future of Gulf Tourism
For tourists, the high-speed rail will unlock new travel experiences: crossing borders in two hours without complex airport procedures, while enjoying electric-train comfort.
This route will ease exploration of Riyadh—transforming into a modern cultural hub—and Doha, a futuristic city home to world-class museums and spectacular urban landscapes.
If completed as planned, the Middle East will enter a new era of eco-friendly transportation while boosting its appeal as a global tourism destination.
