The Indonesia U-22 team is on the brink after a 0-1 defeat to the Philippines in the SEA Games 2025 Group C match at the 700th Anniversary Stadium, Chiang Mai, on Monday night, December 8, 2025. Otu Banatou's sole goal forced Garuda Muda to rely solely on the best runner-up slot for semifinal qualification.

The loss to the Philippines placed Indonesia second in the provisional Group C standings with zero points and a minus-one goal difference. Meanwhile, the Philippines secured a semifinal spot with a perfect six points.

With only one ticket remaining through the best runner-up route, the scenario grows increasingly complicated for Indra Sjafri's squad.

The first requirement is clear: Indonesia must defeat Myanmar in the final Group C match on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the 700th Anniversary Stadium, Chiang Mai.

A draw, regardless of the score, would maintain Indonesia's position as Group C runner-up due to their superior goal difference over Myanmar.

Indonesia stands at minus one, Myanmar at minus two. However, a draw wouldn't secure Indonesia's semifinal berth, as current runners-up in Groups A and B already hold three points.

Even victory alone is insufficient. Indonesia must win by a significant margin to surpass other groups' runners-up in goal surplus.

Group A's situation offers slight hope. Provisional runner-up Timor Leste holds three points with a minus-three goal difference. A mere 1-0 Indonesian win over Myanmar would surpass Timor Leste.

But Group B presents challenges. Vietnam currently leads Group B's runners-up with three points and a +1 goal difference, while Malaysia also has three points with a +3 goal surplus.

The Malaysia vs Vietnam clash on Thursday, December 11, 2025, will critically impact Garuda Muda's chances. A draw in that match eliminates Indonesia.

However, if Malaysia and Vietnam produce a decisive result (no draw), Indonesia's opportunity remains. Goal difference would then determine semifinal qualification.

Ultimately, Indonesia's path to the SEA Games 2025 semifinals narrows to two requirements: First, a substantial victory over Myanmar. Second, the Malaysia-Vietnam match must not end in a draw.

With their fate hinging on others' results, Garuda Muda has zero margin for error. A steep path lies ahead, but hope persists—provided scenarios align and a decisive victory is achieved.
