The Indonesian women's national volleyball team has finally announced its squad for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, with one name immediately grabbing attention: Megawati Hangestri. After missing several major tournaments, the outside hitter currently playing in the South Korean League has returned to wear the Red and White jersey.

Megatron — Megawati's nickname — returning isn't just about reuniting with the national team. More significantly, it signals how serious Indonesia is about competing again at Southeast Asia's highest level. Megawati's increasingly mature performances since playing for Red Sparks club have ignited major hopes for Indonesian volleyball fans.

Indonesian women's volleyball coach Marcos Sugiyama has emphasized his ambition to build a strong foundation, not just for SEA Games but for long-term international competition. Besides recalling Megawati, Marcos has also called up experienced names like Mediol Stiovany Yoku, Syelomitha Afrilauza Wongkar, and Yolana Bheta Pangestika.

New Direction for National Team Under Marcos Sugiyama

Interestingly, this team composition feels fresher. Many young players who excelled at the 2025 Women's Volleyball U-21 World Cup have now graduated to the senior team. Names like Ajeng Nur Cahaya, Pascalina Mahuze, Chelsa Berliana, Namira Ramadhanti, and Indah Guretno are part of PBVSI's massive regeneration project.

Their presence shows Indonesia's boldness in creating space for young talents, a crucial step for maintaining long-term competitive cycles.

However, one notable observation: Junaida Santi, the standout U-21 national team star throughout the world tournament, didn't make the 14-player list. This decision certainly raises questions, though Marcos might be preparing a specialized development pathway for this rising star.

SEA Games 2025: True Test for New Generation

The volleyball events at the 2025 SEA Games will run from December 10–19, with this year predicted to be more competitive than previous editions. Host Thailand has confirmed full-strength participation, while Vietnam and Philippines continue strengthening naturalization programs and youth development.

For Indonesia, blending senior and U-21 players could create an exciting dynamic. The signature speed of young players combined with Megawati's power-hitting could forge a new, more modern and explosive playing style. Especially since Megawati has developed rapidly after experiencing high-level professional play in Korea - from training intensity to attack patterns and adapting against much taller foreign middle blockers.

Megawati's return also boosts team confidence. In international competitions, having a star player with global experience often proves decisive for both gameplay quality and competitive mentality.
