Ahead of the 2025 Christmas and 2026 New Year holiday season, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is introducing a major upgrade to its fleet. Thirty-five Stainless Steel New Generation (SSNG) trainsets manufactured by PT INKA are ready for operation to strengthen transportation services during the peak year-end travel period.
This renewal marks an important milestone for the travel industry, especially for younger generations who increasingly rely on trains as their primary transportation choice for both short and long-distance journeys.
KAI's President Director, Bobby Rasyidin, emphasized that fleet modernization is the company's top priority.

“The arrival of these 35 new trainsets strengthens our operational readiness. We present these more modern and reliable facilities so customers experience better service quality during the Nataru (Christmas and New Year) period,” stated Bobby in his announcement in Jakarta.
This facility enhancement is relevant given the increasing trend of public mobility every year-end. Trains are now not just a means of transportation, but also part of a travel experience expected to be comfortable, efficient, and safe.
Facility Upgrades for More Stable and Efficient Journeys
The 35 SSNG trainsets consist of 612 passenger car units, dining cars, and power generator cars. The presence of this new fleet demonstrates the commitment of KAI and PT INKA to strengthening national transportation infrastructure, especially on routes popular with young travelers.
The SSNG series features Executive and Economy classes with improved interior design, more complete supporting facilities, and operational technology designed to provide better stability during travel.
This upgrade directly impacts passengers, especially on long-distance journeys where comfort and vehicle reliability are key factors.
The 34th trainset is scheduled to replace the fleet for the Turangga and Argo Wilis trains—two long-distance services favored by many travelers. With the support of the new fleet, service quality on these routes is expected to become more consistent, especially when facing the year-end travel surge.
This year, the KAI Group is providing a total of 49,635,448 seats, an 8.9 percent increase compared to the previous year, and operating over 40,000 train journeys. The addition of 54 Intercity Train journeys per day on routes with the highest demand also provides more schedule options for the public.
Ticket Booking Surge, Indicating Sustained High Travel Interest
As of Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 09:00, ticket bookings for the 2025 Christmas and 2026 New Year transportation show a positive trend. From a total capacity of 3,506,104 seats, 715,950 tickets have been sold, representing approximately 20.4 percent. This indicates public interest in traveling by train remains high.
A 30 percent discount program is also attracting many passengers. From 1,509,080 available seats, 243,057 tickets have been booked, or 16.3 percent. This promotion offers travelers a chance to enjoy year-end journeys more cost-effectively without sacrificing comfort.
KAI's Vice President of Corporate Communications, Anne Purba, emphasized the company's commitment to improving service quality.
“KAI is committed to ensuring this year's Nataru travel remains smooth, safe, and comfortable for all customers. We hope the public can enjoy a better travel experience through our continuously enhanced services,” she said.
The arrival of the SSNG is part of this strategy, ensuring users get a more modern, stable travel experience that meets the expectations of today's customers, including the younger generation who are increasingly selective in choosing transportation modes.
For travelers, especially those frequently taking intercity trips, the SSNG offers several key benefits.
As solo traveling and leisure travel trends rise among young people, this fleet upgrade becomes a supporting element that makes trains increasingly relevant as a modern transportation mode.
The modernization of 35 SSNG trainsets is a crucial step for KAI in strengthening services ahead of the year-end holidays. With improved facilities, additional journeys, and increased capacity, the travel experience for the public—especially the younger generation prioritizing efficiency and comfort—is guaranteed to improve.
This transformation makes trains not just a transportation tool, but also part of a more curated, safe, and modern standard travel experience.
