Indonesia pushed for a late consolation goal via a headed attempt from Rizky Eka in the closing minutes, but this effort was also denied by Patrik Le Giang. When the referee blew the final whistle, Vietnam retained their 3-0 winning margin.
This result moves Vietnam to the top of the provisional Group A standings on seven points, ahead of Singapore only on goal difference.
Indonesia dropped to third position with six points from three matches played. Despite this setback, Garuda still retain a realistic chance to qualify for the semi-finals.
Indonesia are now required to secure a full three points when they face Singapore in the final group stage fixture on 7 August. Failure to win this match will eliminate Indonesia from the 2026 AFF Cup.
Indonesian National Team head coach John Herdman accepted that Vietnam were worthy winners, having executed a superior gameplan particularly on the tactical side.
"I think we have to be honest, our performance was not good enough today. Tactically they outplayed us," stated Herdman in his post-match interview.
The 51 year old coach stressed that this defeat must immediately be reviewed and used for improvement. With extremely limited preparation time before the Singapore fixture, the entire squad must regroup without delay.
"As a coach you have to learn fast in this job, very fast. That Singapore match is coming at us extremely quickly," he added.
Herdman also urged his players to move past this disappointing result and redirect full focus onto the upcoming decisive match. He confirmed that Indonesia's tournament fate remains entirely in their own hands, as long as they can defeat Singapore.
