Lamine Yamal Sets a Record That Neither Lionel Messi Nor Cristiano Ronaldo Has Ever Achieved

Lamine Yamal has proven he is far more than just a rising young star. At only 19 years old, the Barcelona prodigy successfully led Spain to lift the 2026 World Cup trophy, while also setting a series of records that not even Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo had ever achieved at the same age.

Spain secured their second ever World Cup title after defeating Argentina 1-0 via a Ferran Torres goal in extra time at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, on early Monday morning 20 July WIB.

Even though he did not score the match-winning goal, this tournament victory has permanently cemented Yamal's name in world football history.

First Teenager To Win Both Euro And World Cup

Success on United States soil completes Yamal's international trophy collection in an incredibly short period.

After guiding Spain to Euro 2024 glory at 17 years old and being named the tournament's Best Young Player, the number 19 has now lifted the most prestigious trophy in global football.

Yamal is the first teenager in recorded history to win both the European Championship and the FIFA World Cup.

Yamal was not as prolific at the 2026 World Cup as he was during the Euros. However, his single tournament goal and consistent contributions from the knockout stage onwards formed a critical part of La Roja's winning campaign.

Comeback Following Hamstring Injury

Yamal's path to the World Cup was once surrounded by doubt. He suffered a grade 2 hamstring injury while representing Barcelona in April 2026, which ended his club season prematurely. 

Barcelona medical staff collaborated closely with the Spanish national team medical unit to ensure his rehabilitation process ran at maximum effectiveness.

Yamal recovered in time to be included in Luis de la Fuente's final squad. During the group stage, his playing minutes remained restricted to protect his fitness levels. 

Once the knockout rounds commenced however, he returned as the undisputed first choice on the right wing, and eventually helped Spain be crowned world champions.

Records Broken Right From The Group Stage

One of Yamal's most historic tournament moments occurred during Spain's 4-0 thrashing of Saudi Arabia in the group stage.

His 11th minute goal made him the youngest ever goalscorer for Spain at the World Cup, achieving this feat at 18 years and 343 days old.

This record also made him the youngest player to score at a men's World Cup since Pele did so at the 1958 tournament.

Trophy Haul Before Turning 20 Years Old

Youth did not stop Yamal from accumulating elite honours. Before lifting the World Cup, he had already won La Liga with Barcelona, Euro 2024 with Spain, the Spanish Super Cup, and Copa del Rey. He went on to claim an additional La Liga title and Spanish Super Cup during the 2025/2026 season.

With the World Cup now added to his honours, Yamal's trophy collection is already exceptional, though one major career target still remains unachieved: the UEFA Champions League.

Praised By Messi, Ronaldo And Guardiola

Yamal's outstanding performances have earned widespread acclaim, including recognition from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi has openly expressed admiration for the young player's achievements.

"What Lamine has done and accomplished up until now is absolutely incredible. He has already become a European champion with the Spanish national team," stated Messi.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente also described Yamal as possessing extremely rare natural talent.

"He is an extraordinary player. God granted him phenomenal ability. There are players that are simply born special. I will not compare him to anyone else, but the great talents, the superstars, the legends of this game always carry that unique quality that sets them apart," said Luis de la Fuente.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick shared the same sentiment.

"He is unlike anyone else. He is a genius. His ability is truly extraordinary," Flick remarked.

Meanwhile Pep Guardiola highlighted the remarkable maturity of Yamal's playing style.

"Normally a player only reaches this level of footballing maturity at 24 or 25 years old. Because his talent is so immense, everyone expects him to produce something spectacular every time he touches the ball, like Stephen Curry hitting three pointers every possession. It does not work that way. He can drop deep to collect the ball, play one-touch passes, slow the tempo for a moment, then play a simple progressive pass. He can dribble in tight spaces, beat defenders, pick out final passes, and ultimately do exactly what helps his team win matches," Guardiola explained.

Cristiano Ronaldo also observed that Yamal is developing in the ideal environment.

"This boy is progressing extremely well. He is at a club that supports his growth, and the same is true with the national team. The surroundings he has right now are perfect for him to keep developing his incredible abilities," Ronaldo stated, as quoted on the official FIFA website.

Erling Haaland gave his own concise but high praise.

"He is just an absolutely incredible player," Haaland said.

Records That Neither Messi Nor Ronaldo Achieved At His Age

Even before becoming world champion, Yamal had already broken multiple long-standing records at Barcelona.

The La Masia academy graduate became the youngest ever starting player in the UEFA Champions League at 16 years 83 days old, the youngest player ever to feature in El Clasico at 16 years 107 days, and the youngest Barcelona player to reach 50 official senior appearances at just 16 years 310 days old.

None of these milestones were ever achieved by Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo when they were at the same age.
