The 2026 FIFA World Cup third place playoff will see France face off against England at Miami Stadium, United States, on Sunday 19 July 2026 at 04.00 WIB. While this is not the final fixture, both teams still have the opportunity to conclude their tournament run on a positive note.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has openly acknowledged that the third place playoff is not the match any of his players dreamed of competing in.

"All of them wanted to play in the final. We gave absolutely everything to reach that stage. Everyone comes to the World Cup to win it, but this is the reality we face now," Tuchel stated.

Meanwhile, France manager Didier Deschamps took a more optimistic stance, despite admitting deep disappointment over failing to reach the final. His squad will still pull out all stops to secure victory.

"We are not in the position we wanted or expected to be in. This disappointment matches the scale of our ambitions, but we have to accept it. There is no other option available," he remarked.

England And France Fall Short Of Expectations

Before the semi-final round kicked off, both France and England were slight favourites to progress to the final. Instead, both sides will now battle for third place.

France's tournament run ended with a 0-2 defeat against Spain. Les Bleus had advanced smoothly through the competition up until that point, only facing an opponent of equal calibre when they came up against La Roja.

Spain's midfield led by Rodri, paired with their solid defensive structure, successfully nullified France's four-man attacking line. Match statistics show France only recorded 0.31 expected goals (xG) - the lowest xG figure the side has ever registered in World Cup history.

For their part, England were just one step away from the final. The Three Lions had taken an early lead against Argentina via an Anthony Gordon goal.

However, after going ahead, England switched to a deep defensive approach. For roughly 30 minutes between taking the lead and Enzo Fernandez scoring the equaliser, England held only 12 percent of ball possession.

This tactical decision ultimately backfired. Argentina rallied to overturn the scoreline to 2-1, with Lionel Messi adding another two assists to his tournament tally.

History Does Not Favour England

The third place playoff is not new territory for England. They contested this fixture at the 1990 World Cup against Italy, and again at the 2018 tournament versus Belgium - suffering defeat on both occasions.

France meanwhile will compete in their fourth World Cup third place playoff. Les Bleus defeated West Germany in 1958, lost to Poland in 1982, then secured another win over Belgium in 1986. Notably, every one of these previous matches produced at least five goals.

Kane's Final World Cup Chance And Deschamps' Legacy

Both coaches are expected to make squad rotations for this match. Even so, a number of players still have the opportunity to set individual career milestones.

This fixture is set to be Harry Kane's final ever World Cup appearance. The England captain has scored 14 goals across his World Cup career, equalling German legend Gerd Müller as the competition's 5th all-time top goalscorer. Kane sits just one goal behind Ronaldo Nazário, who holds 15 World Cup goals.

On the French side, Kylian Mbappé remains the second highest all-time World Cup goalscorer with 20 goals, trailing only Lionel Messi on 21 goals by a single strike.

For Didier Deschamps, this match also presents the chance to end his tenure as France head coach on a high. He is one of only three people in history to win the World Cup both as a player (1998) and as a manager (2018).

France vs England Head To Head

This upcoming fixture will mark the fourth World Cup meeting between the two nations.

England won the first two encounters: 2-0 at the 1966 World Cup, and 3-1 at the 1982 tournament. However, France claimed victory in their most recent World Cup clash, winning 2-1 at the 2022 quarter final stage.

Overall, England have recorded just one win from their last nine meetings against France, alongside two draws and six defeats. That sole victory came in a November 2015 friendly match which finished 2-0 to England.

France vs England Match Prediction

According to Opta Supercomputer simulations that ran 25,000 virtual match iterations, France are the favourites to claim third place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Les Bleus hold a 50.7% chance of securing victory inside 90 minutes. England are given a 25.6% chance of winning in regular time, while there is a 23.7% probability that the match will finish level after 90 minutes.

Based on this data, France are considered the more likely side to end their 2026 World Cup campaign with a win, delivering a fitting send-off for Didier Deschamps' reign as Les Bleus head coach.
