Lionel Messi has once again proven his status as one of the greatest players in the history of World Football. The captain of the Argentina National Team set a number of prestigious records after scoring a hat-trick to lead Argentina to a 3-0 victory over Algeria in the 2026 World Cup Group J match held in Kansas City, early Wednesday WIB.

Messi's outstanding performance did not only secure Argentina a convincing opening win for the tournament, but also cemented his name in World Cup history. As cited from FIFA, the three goals scored against Algeria made the megastar the oldest player ever to register a hat-trick across the entire history of the tournament.

At the time he netted all three of Argentina's goals, Messi was aged 38 years and 357 days. This figure surpassed the previous record held by Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal National Team captain scored his World Cup hat-trick aged 33 years and 130 days against Spain at the 2018 World Cup.

These three additional goals have brought Messi's total World Cup goal tally to 16. This number equals the all-time top goalscorer record that was previously held exclusively by German Football Legend Miroslav Klose.

"What I am feeling right now is a true blessing. I am grateful that I have managed to achieve every one of my dreams, even surpassing everything I ever imagined, both in my professional career and personal life. Right now I just want to savour every single moment, be part of this incredible team, feel at home here, and enjoy playing on the pitch. All of this is far greater than anything I ever dreamed of as a little boy," Messi stated after the match, as quoted by FIFA.

With 16 goals to his name, Messi now stands alone as Argentina's all-time top goalscorer in World Cup history. He sits far ahead of Gabriel Batistuta who recorded 10 goals, and has outpaced great names including Diego Maradona and Guillermo Stabile who both finished on 8 World Cup goals.

The hat-trick against Algeria also makes Messi the highest scoring South American player in World Cup history. The previous record was held by Brazil legend Ronaldo Nazário, who ended his World Cup career with 15 goals.

Two long-range goals scored by Messi in Kansas City brought yet another milestone. Messi now holds a total of 6 World Cup goals scored from outside the penalty box, surpassing the previous record of 5 goals held by Brazilian legend Rivellino.

Messi's World Cup long-range goals were scored against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria at the 2014 edition, against Mexico in 2022, plus the two additional goals against Algeria at the 2026 World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup has further solidified Messi's position as the most experienced player to ever appear on football's biggest global stage. He is now the only player in history to have competed in six separate World Cup editions, a record that may be equalled by Cristiano Ronaldo when Portugal faces DR Congo.

Prior to this tournament, Messi and Ronaldo shared the record for five World Cup appearances alongside Antonio Carbajal, Lothar Matthaus, Rafa Marquez and Andres Guardado. Messi now occupies this top position alone.

The match against Algeria marked Messi's 27th World Cup appearance. He retains the record for most matches played at the tournament, surpassing the long-standing previous record held by Lothar Matthaus.

As Argentina's captain, Messi has now recorded 20 appearances leading his national side at the World Cup. This figure surpasses Rafa Marquez who earned 17 captain appearances, and Diego Maradona who captained Argentina for 16 World Cup matches.

Messi's dominance over tournament history also extends to total minutes played. Up to and including the Algeria fixture, he has accumulated 2,404 minutes on the pitch at World Cups, beating the previous record of 2,217 minutes set by Italy legend Paolo Maldini.

Alongside his renowned goalscoring prowess, Messi is also recognised as an elite playmaker. He is the only player in history to have recorded assists at five different World Cup editions. This record remains unmatched by great names including Pelé, Grzegorz Lato, Diego Maradona and David Beckham, all of whom only registered assists at three separate tournaments.

Alongside Pelé, Messi shares the record for most total goal contributions in World Cup history with 21 combined goals and assists. Both players also hold the joint record of 6 assists across World Cup knockout stages.

Another record that highlights Messi's unique status is his ability to score across every stage of the tournament. He remains the only player ever to have scored in the group stage, Round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final, and the World Cup final.

In addition, Messi is the only player recorded to have scored World Cup goals while competing as a teenager, in his 20s, and in his 30s.

Remarkably, exactly 20 years separate Messi's first ever World Cup goal and his most recent one. This is the longest span between a player's first and last World Cup goal in tournament history, beating Cristiano Ronaldo's previous record of 16 years and 160 days.

"It is difficult to put into words what Messi is. For 20 years now he has consistently produced incredible things, to the point we have grown accustomed to witnessing his greatness. He is also an inspiration for every single person that watches him play," praised Argentina National Team head coach Lionel Scaloni.

Messi's list of achievements is completed by his record for most Man of the Match awards. To date, FIFA has awarded this honour to Messi 12 times - the highest total ever recorded since the award was introduced at the 2002 World Cup.
